I've had problems with warpage with the 1/4 sheeted structure... Sometimes it's nice and flat... sometimes it's a banana.... Try soaking it and weighting it to over compensate for your warp... Hopefully it'll come out. I've found that CA works better than wood glue for this as the wood glue seems to promote warpage...

That's why I went with an open structure on the Fat Free Taco...

I soaked both sides with Windex w/ ammonia... few applications to make sure the sheeting is dampened with it... weighed it flat with 155# of dumbbells on top of a smooth board on my kitchen counter to dry overnight.. Do I need to bend this fuselage past the flat point to get the warp out or will my current method work? There is a bit of a twist to the warp so I don't know if dampening it and bending it with dowels would get it flat.

Appreciate any input!

I realize you have a twist.

Dampen the wood again.... You find the centerline of the twist....it probably runs at a 30 degree angle acraos the fuse...right? You need to lay the the fuselage with the warped edges up on to a strip of wood or a large half dowel and then with some light weights on both of the warped up edges. You may not get it the first time. You have to repeate the process a couple times.....just a little at a time.

That is the way I and many other do it and have done it for years. Wetting the wood and laying it flat with weight on top will not take the warp out...sorry........

After looking at this again last night, I shimmed up the tail with 1/16" of material. Sounds like I need to do more then to bend this back.

Thanks, imsofaman.

Good deal - little by little then...

Got it mostly flat overnight. Still partially damp in the middle. Shimmed the tail to tweak it about 1/8" the opposite way, hit the side that needs to expand a little with windex and braced in place to dry overnight again. Thinking I can add some tuffline flight wires on the back end if all else fails to keep the tail feathers square. All else fails I need to order more balsa!

If I go the new fuse route, I am wondering if I could just do a 1" strip of 1/32 ply down the middle balsa member on each side instead of balsa sheeting the whole enchilada... er Taco side to help reinforce the tail?

Fuse is mostly dry and it's flat! There is about a 1/8" bend to the fin which will be remedied with some flight lines on the tail feathers but the rest of the fuselage is flat. Gonna let it sit bent with weight for a few more days to totally dry. Some of the 1/16" sheeting is warped but I will sand what I can and cover and you won't see once the covering is taught.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Edit... after fully drying another day - this thing is still tweaked.

Took the advice of others and built up a new fuse tonight and placed the old one in the trash. No sheeting on this one so I added some more structure to it.

Built up a new fuselage the last few nights... and no warpage!

Weighs in a 4 3/8 oz... over an ounce lighter than my last fuselage and I expect to see at least 1/4oz less after carving out the wing and engine mounting areas. Also built in the servo mounting areas for the pull-pull controls. Also added 1/4" of carbon fiber ribbon w/ epoxy to each side of a 1/4" bass wood member down the middle. That ribbon is kinda tricky to work with. Pressed in place with saran wrap(releases easily from epoxy) to set it in place.

Weighs in at 3 3/4 oz. after final cut-outs and sanding. Dremel made quick work of the cut-outs.

Do you guys cover the fuselage, wing and horizontal stab first and then remove covering to glue things up or glue things up first and then cover later?

well I switched out the .25FP for the .25FX and spent half the day getting the servos in, just have to put the rest of the radio in and control rods/horns...had this brilliant idea to make my own servo rails.glued em all in and then went to mount a servo only to find that the arms were flush with the covering,,not enough room for control rods then had to go in and cut all of them back down ...its really tight in there for this work..thats what took so long.......Rog
