Hello all, I am new the forums. I was wondering what would be the best 1st single prop war bird to build and fly. I have a sturdy birdy II and a 4 star. I am an ok pilot. I would like to start with a .60 size or higher.

Thanks for any information

Welcome Wounded.
Unless your "In Love " with a particular airplane I'd recommend a P47 or an AT-6.

Ditto on the P-47. It wasnt what I started with when doing 60 sized but IS what I am going to in giant scale. My research told me pretty much the P-47 was a nice stable platform with lots of wing area in pretty much any size. Any kit, or arf (keeping in mind the quality in various mfgrs) would work.

For an ARF I like the VQ models. I have the VQ Zero and it flies very well. Not precise scale, but it looks pretty good, and goes together fairly easy. However, they can be a bit fragile, especially the plastic parts. You can get the VQ's at www.morrishobbies.com

For a kit, I always used to reccomend the .60 size Midwest Mustang. They don't make it any more but sometimes you can find one on Ebay. Just fun-scale, but easy to build and easy to fly. And more impressive than their .40 sized models.

For current kits, I think I would go with the Top Flite P-47 Thunderbolt or the P-39 Airacobra. I have flown a friend's P-47 and it was nice. I have heard that the P-39 is even easier to fly. The tricycle gear would make it easier on the ground. And they do have good construction manuals.

for a kit i recommend the top flite p47.

for an arf i recommend the hangar 9 mustang.

i have both and they both fly well- the h9 is lighter on the wing and flies more like a sport plane. the h9 needs some fixups but nothing major.

use spring air retracts (www.retracts.com) and a good .90 size 2 stroke.

for 60 or 85 inch: P-47, P-51 and Zero all good airplanes with lots of wing area, wide gear and taildraggers. Simple retracts and not rotating like F4U or P-40. Most Top Flight kits are all good flyers.

Great planes P-51 and Hanger 9 P-51 also both great deal. Just paint the nose different from everyone elses.
Today most ARF are better than ever and you can be flying quickly. So pick a warbird you want.

Finally, see what you local field has for warbirds and ask them what they think. Let them help you: either in checking it over or beeing buddy when you fly it for the first time. If instructor with lots of warbird experience available use him. pick his brain. etc.

Mike's two cents
