To all twin guys: I am about to start building my YELLOW P-38J and I was planning to use
two Zenoah 38's, however I discovered that I could not get them in to a full in cowl type
installation. SO, I did some searching and found that the ZDZ-40-RE might do the job.
Aside from its better (smaller) size, weight and higher HP it seemed to be THE best engine(s)
for the 38. My question is do any of you guys have or know of this combination and or a better
idea than this one. I would appreciate ANY and ALL thoughts on my problem. THANKS in advance.

The ZDZ 40 installation has been done in Texas and there is a webposting on it.
Will try to find. The modler was very happy.
If I can find, will let you know.

Many thanks Twinman, by the way can you tell me about the P-38 you have
pictured. It looks like a Yellow. Thanks again for your efforts.

Dat ain't no Yellow!

Dis be a Yellow!

Well, you asked for all opinions, so I'll give you the "minority report."

I fly mine with 3W24's and I really like them. They turn APC 18 X 10's at 6,900 rpm and they're still getting better, and so far they've been very reliable. They fit completely within the cowls, except for the exhaust pipes (see picture #1). Admittedly, I don't have tons of extra power, but I take off easily within the confines of a 400' grass runway, it turns nicely without hanging on the props at about 1/2 throttle, and I land at < 1/4 throttle. The only drawback I've found is that they are LOUD little devils and suck almost as much fuel as G-38's, which stands to reason, since they put out almost as much power as G-38's. My buddy RV Man put G-38's in his Yellow and they had ample power, but he had the misfortune to lose one engine on maiden and drilled in so fast and hard that he knocked down an old abandoned barn in the distance (see picture #2)

Sure, I'm occasionally smitten with attacks of remorse for not having installed 3W42's to cut flaming holes in the sky, but they are about 15 mm taller than the 3W24's, so would require a lot of cutting on cowl bottoms. And sure, I doubt one 3W24 could keep a Yellow in the air very long if engine-out, but I don't like my chances with engine-out anyway, and I think over-powering a P-38 can get you in a lot of trouble, too.

In my limited experience with the Yellow, I've had a lot of hassles with the gear on a rough grass field, and quite frankly, my heart still pounds when I fly it, but it handles very gently and predictably with 3W24 power. It's no harder to fly than any other twin I own, and easier than some warbirds.

Twinman: I never heard any feedback on that Yellow you built and magnificently over-powered (ZDZ 80's??).

Dear kram,
Special thanks for your input. I love that photo of you holding back your 38!!!
I must tell you though using 24's would give me a recurring nightmare of an
engine out on takeoff and a snap roll AND the grass cutting result. Thanks for
the suggestion of 3W42s, I'll consider those along with the ZDZ-40s. You see
I am new to this hobby and espically TWINS. I know you think I have gone
over the edge what with moving up this fast to advanced type models, but
at my age I may not have the luxury of time. In any case my compliments to
you and thanks for your responce.
regards,
zusie

Flew mine for ten years with the 38's. The proto I built for Yellow had Sach 2.4 in it. Yellow used that plane in its ads overseas. Yellow also used my F 18 twin in its first catalouge for many years.

Sorry for delay to answer. No, that plane is not a Yellow. Is at least 10 years old and I am the third owner and only the first to actually fly it. It is a scratch built at 108" wings, and I kind of use it as a trainer.
Good Luck,
Twinman

Thanks alsez for the reply,
Question: How much cutting did you have to do to get those 38s in the cowling?
Also what is a Sach 2.4? Please excuse my ignorance!! Are the photos that YELLOW
has on its website your aircraft?? Also what do you think of my idea of using
ZDZ-40s?? Thank you again for your response.
regards,
zusie

Go to rcwarbirds.com and the P-38 page. There is a guy in Austin, Texas, Evan Quiros, who has the ZDZ 40 set up. There is another one who detailed the installation in South Texas, go to http://evoshangar.homestead.com/lightning.html for the complete installation.
Note, read the complete story as he had the 3W engines and replaced them with the ZDZ.
I also have used the ZDZ engines and was very happy with them and the service of rc show case.

Thanks twinman for the web page address. What engines do you have in your 108" P-38?

One is reverse rotating.
Hope I have been of assistance.
