Hi all
I have a KOKAM 1500 2S battery pack, that I got for my birthday along with a GWS SlowStick.

The SlowStick came with a 7.2 volt 6 cell 270 mAh nicad pack. Can I use the Lipo instead. The weight is actually about the same for both packs.

The Slowstich has the EPS300C motor/gearbox/prop combo and the ESC is the ICS-50 2amp controller with a JST connector for the battery.

The Lipo pack is one of the new 8c packs with a UltraDeans connector. I dont want to replace the connector as the pack was really intended for an other plane I have. If I create a pigtail with a UltraDean on one end and a JST on the other to connnect the Batt to the ESC would this be OK? This is assuming that its OK to use the LIPO in the first place.

I am also wondering if the 2amp ESC is sufficient for this motor gearbox/prop combo even without the Lipo pack.

Thanks for you help.
Matt

The ESC isn't going to work. It's rated for 2 Amps, and the motor can draw up to 8 Amps.

With the right ESC and connector, there's no reason the LiPoly won't work. It's good for 12 Amps, and will give you better power because of its higher voltage.

Thanks for the reply

As far as the ESC...The LHS sold me the slowstick and a prepackaged set of electronics to go with it(receiver/servos/Esc) and when I questioned the choice, of the ESC he assured me it was OK. Great!!! Now I have to drive an hour to return it and probably argue with him.

The instructions with the SlowStik has no specs on the motor or geardrive, any idea where I could get this info?

I run my Slow Stick with the ICS100 *****BEWARE**** the cut off Voltage for the GWS ESC's are 4.8 volt will most likely ruin your Li-po if you do not monitor the voltage and flight time.

I ordered the Super 20 from FMA it is an Auto sensing ESC made mostly to run the Li-po's.

I recommend you call the hobby shop first to see if the guy will take back his ESC and ni-cd battery. If he won't, you could always order the correct ESC off the internet. It will take a few days to ship, but at least you don't have to drive anywhere. If the guy is willing to take back the goods and give you credit for them, then a good cheap esc (if that is the way you want to go) that should work for you would be the GWS ICS-300. I used that in a GWS E-starter (same motor) with a 1900 mah li-po and it flys great.

Thanks, I called him last night and he will take the ESC back. He says he has some 10 amp esc that he will give me. I am leaving soon to look them over. I actually bought the Lipo for another plane that has a 10 amp ESC thats supposedly Lipo ready(plantranco?), however all the connectors are differant.
He really seems to be a nice guy and sorry for my inconvience. What really seems to be the problem is that while he's an experienced flyer and has had several of his builds featured in the AMA and other mags, plus winning quite a few competitions, he's as new to electrics as I am.

He has an awesome shop by the way for anyone in the Allentown Pa area. He will give tours of his private collection if the shop isn't busy. He will also let you fly most of the planes he has for sale in the giant field in back of the shop. He also will throw in several free flight lessons. Wish his shop was closer.
