Today I put 4 10 minute flights on my Aeroworks Ege 540 T. One poster suggested teflon tape like plumbers use and so far so good. I also have my safety wire quite tight so it my be helping to keep the engine from shakeing the muffler.

Bugger.....the exhaust deflector on the end of the stub idea worked for a while, but mine is blown to bits now! I've put maybe a dozen flights on it with just the stub and the deflector, then yesterday afternoon it suddenly sounded strange, almost like the exhaust noise was oscillating, plus it got louder. Upon landing, I discovered that roughly half the deflector is gone, plus one side of what's left is blown off! The oscillating noise must have been the other half flapping over the hole....sounded very strange indeed. A mate who was at the field said if he had a Tiger Moth, that's exactly what he would want it to sound like though

When I broke the engine in on the bench, I did note that the three 2.5mm screws holding the muffler cap on were loosening slightly. After the break-in, I cleaned everything thoroughly with lacquer thinner, applied blue RTV to the joint and red loc-tite to the screws.

I flew it yesterday, three flights totalling 35 minutes. No sign of any loosening. This is with an APC 15-8. The airplane (Kangke CAP 232 Sport) doesn't want to slow down enough at idle to suit me for landing, so I'm going to try an APC 16-6.

I think Mike James hit it; you guys with problems are experiencing major vibration trouble due to flexing or imbalanced props, or perhaps an insufficiently robust engine mount.

I have a YS .91 fz mounted inverted in the .60 size AW Edge 540T ARF. To get the exhaust out of the cowl, I intalled a piece of brss tubing with a clamp on the end of the muffler. On the first flight the three screws holding on the back loosened and two came out. I bought some red loctite and reinstalled the screws with it. On the next test flight the whole end of the muffler where the tube was clamped onto came off and the tubing was never seen again. I like the idea of no muffler but don't know how much noisier it'll be. I will try and see if I get the chance tomorrow.

Actually, it almost sounds the same to me. It has a lower frequency to the exhust, not as staccato, but mellow.

I'll bet if someone had a Db meter, there wouldn't be a whole lot of difference...

....plus it just sounds better!

Please let us know what you think.

Happy Flying!

The white teflon plumbers tape is working great on my YS 91 AC... numerous flights.... I also have the engine soft mounted..not sure if that would be the difference.

Mr. Bonk,
Thank you so much fdor the tip about the teflon plumbers tape. I even posted the info over on the YS page of RCU when I get down under I'll buy you a large Lager. I really enjoyed the Swan Lager when I was in Freemantel/Perth.

No worries I can't remember who suggested it to me originally....I think it may have been LadyFlier. I even use it for gaskets on my 2-stroke mufflers. 2 layers of plumbers tape over the manifold, bolt the muffler back on and forget about it. Not even the slightest hint of a leak since, on any of them

White teflon plumbers tape. Use it on all of my 4 strokes. Have not lost a muffler yet.

Cheers

Hey everyone, try a slimline pitts muffler for the ys91. I have one on my aeroworks 540 and it works good and looks good too. It can never come off.

Crash and burn, I race dragsters, and we dont plug the exhaust on the headers to keep the cool air from getting to the hot valves..

The plugs are to keep debris rocks and that sort of stuff from getting in the headers and ruining the valves.

Thanks, edgeguy !

I like the Pitts solution! Thanks for the tip!

When I was younger (when dirt was new), we used to always go to Fremont (CA) drag strip. We saw Don Garlits (or was it Don Prudome?) race there once and luckily we had a pit pass. Asked his head-wrench "why do you put those ping-pong balls in the exhaust after a run?" And he said because the cool air may warp the valves.

Of course, that was in the early '60's and the REAL reason may have been unknown....

...I think your reason makes much more sense to me.

Thanks!
