I'm the proud owner of a Kyosho P-40 and AT-6 - still in the box - and I'm considering pushing the envelope a bit by installing an OS-61 FX in one of these puppies...

Any comments? Do you think it can be done (without dire consequences)?

Zipper,
I flew my Kyosho AT-6 using a SuperTigre .61 mounted horizontally with a Pitts and it was just about adequate. You should have no problem with your engine choice.

Well, I figured as much. The guys at my club are pretty much of the same opinion.

However.... I called the good people at Tower and Hobbico and spoke with them about the question.

They obviously based their argument on Kyosho's max. engine recommendations (an OS .46 FX, for example), saying that an OS 61FX would be too powerful for the airframe and possibly vibrate it apart.

As far as size goes, the 61 is slightly taller/wider and weighs about 6.2 oz more.

Any more comments from anybody would be helpful!

Tnx,
Zipperneck

I also have a NIB Kyosho AT-6 sitting on the shelf and was going to initially power it with a .46 but after extensive Google research have found the major opinion is to go much larger on the engine.

Here is an excellent video of a Kyosho AT-6 with retracts and powered with an Irvine .72 engine:

Ok - but what about the size.

According to OS's web site. The OS 46FX is 51mm wide and 88mm tall, whereas the OS 61FX is 61mm wide and 100.5mm tall and 13.2 oz and 19.4 oz respectively.

The cowling on the P-40 is only 105mm wide, leaving only 22mm left on each side - not counting the muffler (I ordered a Slimliensport muffler - LXFH00).

I just hope it fits into either the P-40 or the AT-6 and that the weight is not a problem. I just hope cooling is not a problem due to the reduced space (if it fits).

I plan to put Euro-Kit pneumatic retracts in these puppies, by the way.

I can't speak for the P-40 but I can assure you that weight will not be an issue with the AT-6. You will need to add weight to the nose with anything short of an M1 Abrams tank engine. Trust me.

I guarrantee you if you fly the P-40 with a .61 you'll blow the horizontal stabilizer off in half the time the .46 does. This is one of the reasons the P-40 was discontinued. Beef it up or you'll lose it.

Well Mike, that sounds like pretty sound advice.

Now that you mention it, I believe I saw a thread on the same subject on a Jamara Spitfire....

I'll check it out and beef it up. Thanks for the heads up.

I use to fly my Kyosho Spitfire with the O.S. .61 FX and it was a ball to fly. It wasn't fast enough, so I now use a Jett .50.

I have been amazed that it has held up. I did strengthen the firewall and tail area. On one high speed pass I did lose a patch of covering off the bottom of the wing. A piece about 6" in circumfrence just blew out.

No other problems though, with many flights over a 2 year period.

Dave,
What did you do to beef up the firewall?

Dave,
Just curious, what size prop are you turning with that OS 61 on your spit?

I epoxied an additional piece of 1/8" aircraft ply on the back of the existing firewall and layed in fiberglass as best I could in the corners. Work with a bunch of small pieces of fiberglass and overlap them, push them in place with a small brush with your resin.

With the O.S. .61 FX I used a 10x8 and a 11x7 APC props.

With the Jett .50 I use a 10x7 and its quite a bit faster.

Here is my Kyosho P-40 that I just finished. As you can see, I've made a few modifications. This is my second P-40. The first one crashed do to horizontal stab failure. This one has a custom made stab that I built up out of 1/4 inch balsa. I also got rid of the dowels in favor of push-rods. Some of you might think I'm crazy, but I think there's a link between dowels and fluttering. So far, I've had five flights on this thing. Overall, I can say its a steady flyer, but it can be a handful on windy days.

Thanks for your input Skill...

The P-40 that I have is camo. Did you recover yours or did it come all green? Also, what engine/prop do you have on it? Retracts?

I plan on installing a brand new OS 61 FX (Tower has dropped the price to $144,99), inverted if need be + easy glow, and a slimline muffler.

Zip,

Yes, I re-covered the plane. The camo covering looks nice out of the box, but once its out in the sun, it WILL sag. Even after you re shrink it. It also punctures very easily. I used monokote olive drab and dove grey and sprayed it with lustercote flat clear. I got the stars from Major Decals. I'm still looking for U.S. ARMY for the bottom. I'm using O.S. 46 FX with an 11x7 prop. Anything bigger will be overkill. The plane screams at half throttle. Thats about where I keep it most of the time. The cowl space is tight. I'm not sure a slimline will work. Cooling is another problem. Notice in the picture a very large opening in the bottom of the cowl. That seems to help a lot. The retracts are Hobbico. They do well for the price. I had to modify them, but so far they've held up well on some less than perfect landings. I had to pull the struts out and file the tops down a bit. Before, when I tightned the linkage to get the "slop" out, the gear would bind during retraction. Now I fly slop free. It also helps on ground handling. One more thing, use nylon bell cranks. The ones the came with the plane will bend and break. Hope this helps.
