I had a CSM 180 Gyro with a standard JR537 servo on it.. The tail would always be all over the place.. I mean, I'd have to use rudder control constantly.. It was like I didn't have a gyro. It was working fine though...

Yesterday, my new GY401/9253 arived, I strapped it in, and brought it in my backyard to hover it... HOLY HORSE POO!

The difference is SOOooooooo huge... The thing would snap it's tail back and forth, and stop dead in it's track when I let the stick go.. It held the tail in it's exact spot even with the wind blowing against it..

I didn't do any foward flight, because I was in my yard, so I can't wait to try it out today.. Wow..

Just wanted to share.

Also, if anyone can help me out.. I have it hooked up to a switch on my radio (JRXP783h) and in one position, the red light on the gyro is on constantly, in the other, it is off.. Is this to switch between heading hold, and non-heading hold? The directions mentioned AVCS I think it was... I'm a little new at the heli game, so any help would be good.. Thanks!

If the light is on, it is in HH, if the light is off its in Non HH. Daz...

Welcome to the world of AVSC gyros! They Rock.
He's right about the LED.
As far as how tight it holds, use your ATV on each end to adjust the gain for heading hold on one end and Std gyro on the other end. See the instructions that were included for which end is which, I can't recall which is which.

I agree, the GY401 is a good gyro, the digital 9253 servo makes for a combination that borders on excellent. But to give all the credit to the gyro is not correct )Just try the GY401 with your slow,analogue JR NES531 servo and see the degridation in performance. Also try your CSM 180 with the digital 9253 and see how the servo makes it a whole new gyro.

The GY401 with even a fast, slop free dual bearing coreless analog servo like the 9205 is a whole different animal then it is with the 9253. (Actually I would take the old Arcamax PI2700 with the 9253 before I would take the GY401 with the NES 531 or even the 9205)

Don't forget, you changed two items in the tail rotor loop, the gyro and the servo!

True indeed - but there is no getting away from the fact that it makes for a great combination. I too was totally gob smacked at the difference the GY401/9523 made.

I took it to the field last night, holy crap. The thing is a whole new heli.. I did my first 5 backwards loops.. I couldn't do that with the other gyro. . .

Also, hovering upside down is much easier as the tail stays locked..

I'll never use a standard gyro & tail servo again!

Futaba has the gyro market like no other. I had a 401, now have a 502 and 601.

What I like about the 502 is the ability to control the tracking and limits. The 401 is real basic, but absolutely solid.

The 601 even holds better, even just in a standard hover. The feel is somewhat smoother, but that could easily be in the setup.

Right now the 502 is in my new Freya 91 and as an example, stall turns are precise like nothing I have ever flown.
