Luke, Looks great, and you not giving as many pictures in my mind is a mistake. In fact I don't think you give enough, except for the wheel wells. I am particularly interested in how you made the gear doors. Could you go into some detail on that? Will we see the gear bay inserts on Ebay soon? And can I just say WOW one more time? Dude your work is great! I wait on the edge of my seat to see if there is a new post by Dion every day! I would also be interested on seeing how you made the struts. Keep up the pix and posts PLEASE!!!

I'll second that. Luke, please keep both posts and pics coming. They are both a guide and an inspiration to the rest of us.

You're completely right with the !QUOT!plastic-point!QUOT!, glad to hear we're thinking in the same lines...

The radial is 10years old, it has never run (well, I ran it now). You can't buy them anymore, it was a one man company producing them until the late nineties. However, this guy lives in Germany and is still around from what I've heard and is willing to provide help where he can do. He produced different types of radials, starting with a little 5-cylinder, the 7-cylinder 4.2, a 9-cylinder 5.8, a big 7-cyl 10.8 (if I'm right) and even some examples of a 14-cyl double row radial...
He didn't produce much more than 200 pieces of each type, and they are really worth gold. I got mine second hand from an old man who had to give up this wonderful hobby...
Despite of waiting in a box for 10 years, the radial started immediatly and didn't stop until I told him to, now that's what I call an engine. You should hear the sound, it's amazing.
They provide plenty of torque, at the moment it swings a Menz 24x8 with ease, it picks up RPM like a racing machine with pump.
The outer diameter is some 23cm (approx 9 inches) this leads me to a scale of 1/5.33 => 93!QUOT! ws. I could go smaller, but there's plenty of urge and I can keep the wing-loading lower that way, use robart#150 gear a.s.o....

I will have to make a custom exhaust system (scale look of course), what material did you use on the royal??

The pic attached shows the backside with the OS-carburettor mounted to it. It doesn't need a bigger one, 'cause there is only one cylinder firing at once. The prop, by the way, does two revolutions until all the cylinders are fired once. No reduction gear though, it's all done by the valve control system. The valve pushrods are not enclosed, so you can really see the rods and valves moving while it runs...beautiful...

See ya
Flo

I'm new to rcuniverse. I am a World War II fighter buff and my three favorite fighters are the P-51 Mustang, the F4U Corsair (and it's variants) and the A6M Zero. Several years ago, I was able to acquire both 1/5th scale and 1/8th scale Marutaka Corsair kits from Hobby Barn. I have been following this F2G thread religiously and I am absolutely blown away by your attention detail and now I want to build one. I consider myself a competent builder and was wondering if I should attempt this project on the larger of the two kits. My reasoning being that there are several large-scale Corsair kit manufacturers but not one offers a F2G variant. My deficiency is in area of molding canopies and cowlings (I’ve never done either). Are you offering any how-to plans? Also I am interested in the scale tail landing gear. I always thought that the commercial stuff being offered caused the tail end of the airplane to sit too low (causing a non scale look). Where do you recommend that I begin? Thanks.

Tony

Tony,
Thanks for the compliments and welcome to RCU, we like the same planes! I'm not known for sugar coating anything so I won't start now, the Royal 1/5 Corsair is crap. They designed that one in the dark or something. Your 1/8 scale Royal/Marutaka is very close to scale on the other hand. Don't modify the 1/5 scale, it would just look worse with the fuselage cut down, sell it.

I had my 1/8 plans blown up 33%, that will get you a 82" wing and exactly 1/6 scale. That's perfect for adding scale detail, pilots (BBI) landing gear and folding wings. The tail wheels I make out of PC board will not hold up to well on the 100" Corsairs.

I am working on the F2G plans, at the same time I have several other project that I am doing, some with deadlines that are coming up. So I'm pressed for time right now, I will finish the plans though. I don't have a good place to get copies here in Alabama, I live in a very small town, drove to the Kinko's in Montgomery and the 36" printer was broke. It's a huge pain to get copies made for me, I'm looking for a printer of my own. When I get caught up I'd be more than happy to offer my assistance to help you finish your project. I would start with your 1/8 Corsair for reasons stated above. If you want the F2G I'll need a little more time to finish up the plans and parts. You can build your own tail wheel, the only machined part is the shock plunger and I can make one of those for you.

Early next year I should have a good idea about parts availability, thanks again...

Thanks Dion. I will abandon the notion of the 1/5th scale Marutaka F2G conversion and focus on the 1/8th F2G instead. I am a very patient guy so for me there's no rush (just had a house built here in Jersey, unfinished basement, so I plan to tackle that first. That way I will have a shop from which to work out of, instead of the garage. Cold winters). I will keep an eye out for your releases this year. Thanks again.

Luke, do you happen to have a dummy radial for the F2G Corsair? I'm using a Top Flite Corsair cowl on mine, and I'm looking for one that would fit.

I love your F2G by the way, very nicely done! One interesting thing to note about the paint job on your F2G is that the blue squares on the cowl were a lighter shade of blue than the rest of the plane.

Dion, I replaced the dark blue squares with lighter blue squares. How do you like my cowl now?
