As usual nicely done. Well I started to work on my TF Corsair again after giving up on Sierra retracts and working on other projects. Keep motivating us

Thanks Pete, that's great news you are starting on the Corsair again! Keep it going!

I'm surprised that you built the canopy form almost "free-hand". It's really looking good. I usually do this work with the side profile and formers.

Hey Flo, Surprised? I never do anything the easy way, it's against my principals! I prefer working free-hand, having all kinds of formers or rules hinders me! I like to use my eye to judge things, although it don't always work!

Luke can build anything with a little spit and bubblegum! NICE canopy, dude! I'm gonna need one of those when I get around to my Race #57

Haha, you kill me Glory! Don't know about the bubble gum thing! You will get a canopy, and I want a plane built for it too!!!

OK, back to the build! Didn’t get my clear plastic sheet, UPS man missed delivery, won’t be here till tomorrow. Had a whole day to work on the F2G, so I had to do something!

1. I installed all the snakes needed for the controls, retract and steering. With that done I needed a canopy to finish the top sheeting, so I made one out of ABS for now. I order 8’ sheets of .040 and .020 ABS so using it up is not a worry!

2. Shows the new former F-8B that I had to add to support the rear cockpit deck. I’m making the canopy operable so I wanted to get this area as close to right as I could.

3. Rear deck installed.

4.Here I am tracing the outline of my canopy and checking the fit.

1.The rear turtle deck can be easily sheeted with 2 strips of balsa. Glue the front down first then trim the last little bit in the rear and glue it down. The fuselage is in very rough shape, after the bottom is sheeted I will then start to sculpt and carve it into that sexy shape!

2.Just to see how it will look! I will get my plastic tomorrow, so I’ll be busy again making parts on the vacuum former.

spit and bubblegum... hmmm....

What about cockpit interior? are you going to build a scale cockpit into this Corsair as well? Looking at the pics, it sems that the cockpit floor is fairly high...
Just thoughts and questions

Great, I like thoughts and questions, keeps it interesting! The cockpit floor is at the scale height, and yes I am going to add the cockpit interior. This is a good time to add some great pictures, I've been saving these! Notice that the pilot is sitting on the floor basically and that the seat cushion is at the top of the left and right consoles. Then look at the distance from the top of the consoles to the top cockpit side, not that deep is it? The fact that the rear turtle deck is cut down is adding to the optical illusion that you are seeing. The cockpit is really very shallow.

Hey babysitter! Have I been good? Yes it's race #57, I had someone take them for me, I've never seen it in person. They would have had a hard time getting me off of it with my tape measure! Can I play now?

OK, now for the fun… yea that’s it! Let me just say that vacuum forming white styrene is nothing, trying to get a perfectly clear canopy… now that’s something! You da man if you do’s that! I have formed clear parts in the past, but all were for small fun scale junk, I scratch built a couple of fun scale Mark’s Models Corsairs and I made the canopies for them. I didn’t care about how they looked though! I’m still working on the technique for this but I am getting close to perfection!

First off plaster plugs will never give good results on clear parts, it works great for White Styrene though. I took some .015 Styrene and formed it over my plaster plug , I then hit it with some 600 grit sandpaper to make sure it was smooth.. Then wipe it down with a tack cloth. No matter what you do stuff will stick to the plastic sheet, pulling the protective plastic off the sheet will cause static electricity!

I got the aluminum frame idea from Chad Viech, thank you Chad! I was using wood before, big pain. Using aluminum makes it so easy. I probably made my frame to big, it’s 24” long and it rests on the stock rack stations on the side. I have to use some sheet metal screws on the end of the frame to hold the plastic. The one problem with a frame this size is that the heating element is not that long, so the plastic only gets soft in the middle.

Here it is after forming.

And it pops right off! Now start looking for the smallest of flaws… darn I see a speck right in the clear area!!!!!

Here is my production line, why I kept making them I don’t know! Was having to much fun trying to make the perfect canopy maybe?

Thanks IL2rv-56! I'm glad you are enjoying my thread.

Glory!! Haha, I'll keep that in mind for my next giant scale Corsair thread if I do one!

OK, I have not been working on my project for almost 2 weeks, I have been working on planes though! I am out of town, well... way out of town! I'm in Bellingham Washington, I'll be here one more day then I'll fly back to FL. The plane I got to work on is Bill Anders Skyraider, they are deFrenching it, taking off all the old French antenna and things. It will be painted in the Vietnam camouflage later. I also got to crawl all over his F8F-2 Bearcat, by the way the Bearcat is for sale for $$$2.3 Million if anyone is interested! I am thinking of driving to Seattle tomorrow to see the F2G at the Museum of Flight, not sure if it will be worth it though, you can't get near the thing with all the alarms and cameras around it, really a shame.

See you all later,

Dion

Hehe... have a great trip back, Luke-Baccha-Hoovius. Me, I've had to be away again myself, etc., etc.; but here at home in Boston I have finally gotten started on my Corsair and I am psyched. More on her tomorrow.

Meanwhile, because of the Democratic National Convention we have had solitary F-15 Eagles circling us aloft, exactly as they did on 9/11 and the days following. I cannot describe what it looks, sounds, and feels for me to see this solitary bird aloft as a last line of defense against catastrophe. These are amazing times...to my knowledge we've never had aircraft doing CAP during public events here in Boston!

Have a great trip back, Amigo. Thanks for your cool post today!

Hi Dion!

Coming back on how you managed to build your flaps as I don't have any access to a real Corsair (I envy you for that and of course because of your building skills.....). The method you described on page 4 of this thread, is this how all Corsairs are build or is it specific for the F2G? I like the method as it will be well hidden and have the idea that it would work great.

Greetz,
Arvid.

PS: keep up the good work so we all can learn here.....

John, thank you. Had a great trip, having a hard time getting back into things. I've been obsessing about vacuum forming! I must master it, there is no other way! That Skyraider is a big plane, lot's of room in the fuselage to crawl around! Thanks for the donation John, it is more than enough. I want to see some progress on that Corsair of yours! I'll try and get mine going again!

Nephew! Always nice to have family check in! I don't know if I'll do anything great now as far as technique goes, I'll be doing good just to finish it! Thanks for stopping by Devin!

Hi Arvid, The flap hinge shown is on an F4U-1D, but all Corsairs have the same wing. The only thing that was changed on the F2G is the scoops, everything else is the same. I put levers on the rods coming out of the inboard flaps so they can be lowered with one servo. Thanks for the compliments, I'll try and get going again!

I think I have changed my mind on the F2G I want to model, the one I want has a tail hook the F2G-2. Look at the picture, ain't she a beauty?!!! I may have a F2G-1 tail wheel for sale, wonder if anyone would be interested? Probably not, I could always put it on that other auction site and let them have a bidding war!

More to come soon!

Hi Luke,

Here I was thinking all this time that MacGyver was a fictional character on TV. He's really here on RCU building planes.

I'm new to RCU and just found your posts on the Royal corsair and this one. How do you come up with all this? The inst. panel you made looks awesome.

I would really like to get the details for the gear doors you made. How many layers of cloth and epoxy did you use to form the doors?

All the mods you have posted are fantastic. The second I finish my TF, I want to try some of these on a Marutaka kit.

You have rally raised the bar when it comes to craftsmanship and ingenuity.

Hi Keith! Thanks for those compliments! Glorystomper and John Rood are the funny ones, but I like humor! I just like to tinker with things and figure out problems and do it with as little money as possible. I am obsessed or possessed, not sure what really, but I love the Corsair and every time I build one I want to do another better than the last! I will get you the information you need, or direct you to a site that can. I want to see your TF and I want updates on your Marutaka Corsair!

Glad you like my instrument panel, I'll start a new thread so we can keep this on topic. I'll call it "1/8 Super Scale Corsair Cockpit".

Thanks again and follow along when I get going again!

Hi Luke. I'd love to post a few pics of the TF. Remember that it is straight out of the box. The only mods I made were to use two ail. servos with some of those lovely hatches you rave about, and my big achievement was to add balsa liners to the wheel wells. Wow - call RC report . I'll have to figure out how to post pictures - I'm sure my 9 year old can help.

Let me finish the flaps and pretty it up a little - ie: fill in all the little nicks and dents I seem to put in it, and I'll try to post it.

How hard does your ail. servo work to slide the nyrod through those beatifully curved wings?

The ailerons work so smooth, very easy for one servo to handle. Don't be so hard on yourself about the Corsair! Just keep learning and trying new things on each one, you're doing great! Looking for someone to build one of my cockpits and post there progress on my super scale cockpit thread, check it out!

Yea, I think that would be nice! Now if you would have taken some detail shots of the difficult areas then we would be really excited! Thanks for posting them!
