Sweet, cant wait to see this project done! I have the .40 size GP corsair kit that I would like to do in #57 colours, even though it isnt an f2g, oh well.

I also saw this plane at Oshkosh 2004, wow! I took some pics but nothing special. Hopefully I will be flying meself down to Oshkosk next summer.

Fellow F2G disciples, here's an excellent piece in HYPERSCALE today:

http://acc.kitreview.com/f2gconversionreviewpb_1.htm

It's a detailed review of one very THOROUGH exploration of the F2G Corsair, and in 1/32nd scale. Enjoy!

John

p.s. The writer, "Bondo" Phil Brandt (guess how he got that nickname?) is one heck of a modeler and a true adventurer. Thus, he reminds me of our dangerous friend Mr. Dionysus-Bacchus!

Thanks Recon! Good luck with yours, it'll look great with 57 colors, so go for it.

Hi ya John, thanks for the info. I wonder why he put the bulge below the scoops on the wings? I want to get back on this thing but I thought I would wait to see if anyone would come out with a good set of gear, I need to mount the retracts next. The Sierra retracts are bent forward to far, I hate that! Robinair looks like he has the winning design, but when will they get finished and in the mail?! I might not wait, I have an old set of Rom-Air's that I may use. No gear doors with them though, they have external parts showing.

Hi luke

I have been following along on your cockpit details and pilot. Talk about raising the bar. You already have it up there so high that it needs aviation warning lights.

I hope you reconsider your choice of gear. Any reason you don't want to use the Robarts as you did on your last Royal. Those doors were just freakin gorgeous. I'm being completely selfish here, but I was hoping to see more on that.

Not complete yet but the struts for my 1/8 F2G project are almost ready. I decided to follow the pro, Earl Aune! My struts compress when retracted in a very scale like fashion! I’m using miter gears for the twist in the retracts, should have those done in a few weeks.

Thank you Kelsey, I think I can do it even better! I'm going to try a different method on the doors, keeps it fun to try different things!

P.S. Nice little message at the top of the reply box, now if we can get some Moderators to follow those rules I might make a habit of coming back here, we'll see...

I might be a little naive on this but I wasn't aware that the struts compressed when retracted. Is this a Corsair only thing or present on most other WW2 planes? Is this the reason for the little rod running down the shaft? Looks great Luke, SVX

P.S. Just bought my first Royal Corsair, hope to follow in your foot steps (if I can keep up)

SVX,
Yes that is the reason for the little rod running down the side of the strut. Attached is a couple of pics I took of an F4-U5. The upper part of the assembly is a cable. You can see it in one of the pics it has a lot of slack in it when the strut is compressed. If the strut were retracted without the shortening assembly it would be in the flap well! As a sidenote the strut was 41 57/64ths" long from pivot center to axle centerline. Taxiing position is 2" longer and full extension is an additional 10" (51 57/64ths" !

Dion,
What a find this forum is. I used to live a few miles from Cook Clelands airport in Willoughby, Ohio. I admired that plane as a kid. Saw it compete in the 1949 Cleveland National Air Races. I was about 11 at the time. A couple of years ago I communicated with Richard "Dick" Becker who was Cook's mechanic and co flyer of the F2G's in various configurations. Dick sent me three views of 5 different set ups as piloted by Ben McKillen, Jr, Cook Cleland, Richard Becker, Tony Janazzo and Becker again. Included are Number 57, #94, (clipped and radically clipped) #84, and #74. According to my research some of the Bureau registration numbers are incorrect, some say accidentally and some say on purpose including #57 which had N5588N on wings and tail. Of significant interest is that the color design specifications for # 57 are included.
I have been looking for a kit to modify and to build for electric power off and on. Currently building a 58" Tiger Moth for electric power. Before I go any farther, I am not in your league as far as scale detail is conderned, however, I do feel motivated for proper outline, shape and major structural design. If you would like any of my materials I would be happy to share. I also have a VHS tape that Dick Becker sent me of the 1947 Cleveland National Air Races including the Thompson, Bendix etc.
Best Regards
CanAmDick
