Hi Luke,
Long time no talk. Happy day, I just found and bought my Royal Corsair Kit. All complete except the cockpit canopy is a little damaged. As you are doing, I want to do the old #57 F2G. Somewhere in the past you had fuse drawings on your site for the modifications. Do you still have them and could I copy them?
Also, I found this site which you may already know about http://www.airrace.com/CorsairStatusList2.html. If you remember, when you were in Florida I had told you about the information given to me by Dick Becker about all of Cook Cleland's F2G's. I still would be happy to share if you are interested.

Wow, where has the time gone? Thought it was time to do more work on this little project! As far as the plans go with this plane, they won't be done until the plane is done. As I build I'm adding details and things to them, so at the present time they are not complete.

First I’ll update you on the fuselage, It’s completely sheeted and sanded to shape. I finished the tail wheel, no tail hook this time, thought I’d keep it simple and make the land version!

The retracts were a big issue, I wanted something a little more over the top so I modified an old set of Phom mains I had laying around. They have a few problems though but they also have some strong points. First the front is to tall, so I removed the top front brace and cut the top town to an airfoil shape. Next I moved the drag link plate so that it sat under the retract mount, this makes the link sit deeper in the wing. With those mods I was able to burry the unit deep enough into the wing so that the external link will not stick out when retracted making it possible to use doors. The neat part about these things is how close the strut is to the leading edge. For the struts I made my own based on the Earl Aune units. They compress about 1/2 “ when retracted, a small cable does this just like the full scale. If you look at the pictures you can see it attached to the lever on the side.

I’ve been working on bombs and drop tanks as well as the release mechanism and pylons, in fact I’ll be installing a set of pylons and 1,000 lb bombs on Pete’s Top Flite Corsair! I machined a small aluminum release mechanism, it’s spring loaded and has the wire sticking out of the back of the pylon so that you can attach your ordinance without having to turn on your radio or hit a switch. The pylons themselves are vacuum formed and contain to ply formers, one former is used as a mount for the release and the other is used in a key system to hold the bomb straight. The other part of the key is of course glued to the bomb or tank. My bombs have a light ply center profile piece that makes the bomb very durable, I’ve dropped mine several times from a TF P-51 and they work great. 1/8 dowel is used as an anchor to hold everything together and on the wing. Also notice the small balsa blocks in the wing that the dowel will be glued to.

More later,

Dion

Thanks guys! Your encouragement and input will help to keep me going on this. The wing is by far the most grueling part of the build, I could put together 5 fuselages in the time it takes to do the wing. Pete, you’re going to love the pylons and bombs, I used a very tired and weak standard servo to drop the bombs and it had no problem at all.

First picture shows the bottom of the wing, so far I have installed the retracts, pylons and gear door actuators. The bombs drop great, hooked it up to my radio and gave it a try. The gear doors will be opened and closed via servo control using a Jomar door sequencer. I have it set up to use one servo to open close the doors, this way the gear bays can be made much smaller. I will show much more detailed pictures later when I get the doors mounted, these are just to show you where I’m at and give you a teaser!

I had a couple of Sonic-Tronics Phoenix Tricycle Gear Door Kits so I used the hinges out of those, they look more scale like. I’ll sheet the bottom of the wing now and finish the gear doors, then I can finish sheeting the top. I am going to use a very light sheet aluminum for the doors this time, they are very small and really don’t have that much of a compound shape to them anyway. The aluminum should bend just fine and stay the proper shape! Last thing will be to finish out the flaps, and then I’m ready to glass!

Till next time,

Dion

Hello Dion,

glad to see you back here. BTW I got my hands on a Marutaka F4U .60-.90 sized kit. Is it the exact same kit as the Royals you build ? Which F4U version are they closest to ?

And also, you've certainly been around that, which are the most appropriate rotating retracts ?

Thx

Congrats on the Marutaka F4U, they are getting very expensive! Yes, it is the same as the Royal. The kit is an F4U-1D but everything from the early F4U-1 up to the 1D can be modeled using that kit. Or you could do the F2G! You building it or just sticking it in the closet?

Dion,

That's a big void where the gear door pushrod passes through the rear spar. Will you double that area?

Mhh actually I don't think I have the skills to build it perfectly right now, especially regarding the covering job. So I have to be patient... I also have the same size Marutaka Fw190 kit sitting with him. And yes, not cheap !! I have plans though. I have bought a .90 sized semi-scale P40 svenson kit to train before starting the marutakas... what about the retracts for the Corsair ? Any suggested brand ?

Thx

That hole is from my old flap idea, I'll close that. As far as the rear spar goes, on my first Royal I cut it completely off at the gear doors so that I could make the struts longer! Never had a problem with the wing, remember that the Royal kit's all use 3/32" sheet skins, much stronger than the popular 1/16" sheet used now. I plan to run carbon fiber strips down both spars before I finish sheeting though, it's light and very strong. Good observation Pete! By the way you going to the Christmas party on the 3rd?

I would use anything but the Robarts, they take special care when installing and you must have landings down pat! Stay tuned for my finishing part of this build, learn how to do it LIGHT and easy!

Hi Dion

Fantastic work you are doing and you have inspired me have a go at building my own. I'm building a 1/6th scale 82" F4U-1d from the Brian Taylor plan.

I'm facinated by your method of working your gear doors. I tried a similar setup with my 101" B-25 bomb bay doors but couldn't get the doors to pull up really tight without having the servo stall and buzz at the end of its' travel. Is there a trick to making this sort of setup work where a servo is pulling against a stop rather than hanging in a neutral rudder postion for example? On the B-25 I ended up using two air cylinders to work the doors which allowed the doors to pull tight against their stops and no buzz but a servo would sure be simpler.

Great idea to use circuit board to make the tailwheel. I've never used this before but it really is great stuff to work with. Not sure if the one in the pic will be the one I use or if I call it a 'protype' and build a neater one. Your idea of making the arrestor hook functional ( in an up/down sense and not a landing sense!) is so tempting now that you have shown us how it is done but lack of spare radio channels might stop me. This Corsair will be electric and I'm building in a 70 watt audio amp. This will play the recorded sound of a real Pratt and Whitney R-2800 coupled to the throttle channel thanks to a sound card the size of a thumbnail from a place in Germany that makes them. It wil chew spare radio channels tho with guns and start up/shut down sequences.

I'm having fun looking at various ways to make the canopy opening functional. For the above reason a servo is not the preferred option altho I've made one work in a 65" P-51 but the Corsair at this scale needs a full 4" of travel. Air and a system based on a sail winch are two other options. No doubt this has already been done many times but are there details of working designs anywhere?

Keep up the inspirational work and give us Sunday sport-scale hacks something to aim for.

Thanks
Richard

Thanks Richard for the compliments! I must say you are doing an awesome job on your Corsair as well! Thanks for posting the pictures too. I don't have much time this morning but I wanted to at least answer one question you had about the servo pulling the gear doors up:

quote:

I'm facinated by your method of working your gear doors. I tried a similar setup with my 101" B-25 bomb bay doors but couldn't get the doors to pull up really tight without having the servo stall and buzz at the end of its' travel.

The trick to this is the "End Point" where the servo is at rest, or should be! You don't want a servo straining to hold the doors shut so set it up as in the illustration below. You can put a lot of strain on a servo, but once it reaches the "Finished" point in it's travel as shown below it will not be straining at all! I've always set my bomb drops up this way, so it was easy to make the gear doors work using the same principle.

The second picture is the set up I'm using on my gear doors. Using stiff steel throttle cable push-rods will allow for some bending in the system. This will allow me to put a lot of force on the gear doors to keep them closed and also under the tension of the cable with absolutely no strain on the servo.

Thanks again, I'll write more later. Again great job on your Corsair, keep up the great work!

Dion

Strykaas,

I just ordered a set of Robinaire retracts. IMO, they are the best choice of the currently available units. I will have to modify wing a little. Lee has said the distance from front to back is 8 1/4 inches (using a 3 1/2 dia wheel). After reviewing my plans, I can substitute the front sub leading edge with 1/8 ply and eliminate the front ply brace. Then I can move the rear spar 1/2 rearward, and this will create a pocket that has a length of 8 3/8.
Thats my plan of attack for the moment. I just picked up one of these kits for 150.00!!

Dion, how bout a pix with the gear down? Beautiful job by the way, Man that door mechanism is exactly what I was thinking, I love that. Better tha having that wire up in the gear area!

Hi Dion

That's exactly the information I was after. Thanks heaps!

I've already run air lines for the gear doors and sheeted the wing but I'll now try and thread a servo wire thru. It looks like I will be able to get some building time in this weekend so hope to get some door action happening now with no strained servos.

Thanks again
Richard

Hey all

I have been reading posts on rcuniverse.com for some time, but I have never posted any comments. Sad to say I guess. What a great place to go for knowledge and building techniques.

I have been watching closely at the at this Build. WOW! I have been VERY impresssed with your work Dion. I cant wait for the newest thing to come out from you!! I have been working a on the GE Top Flight 1/8 Kit. I know this is the F2G, but you have inspired me to add just a bit more detail than before..
I am currently a Sheet Metal Mechanic on the C-130 Herc, about 3 years now. I have the Skip Mast Plans to build one, but it wont be till im done with this kit.
Just some of the details on the Corsair...

1. I have designed a full cockpit, similar to yours. But you have given many new ideas for a NEW one..
2. I have designed working cowl flaps, one servo, built with aluminium .020 I will post pictures when I have completed the modified cowl.
3. There is no folding wing design, but yes, I am building that too... These will be air driven. The hardest thing is the outboard flap.... If you have ideas, I would love to hear from anyone. The mounts will be made of .250 aluminium for strength, but I am considering phenolic with bushings for this.
4. I will include retractable tail and mains, but I have Robarts all the way around. In the future, I will scratch build one.

These are the biggest details so far, but I am considering more on the flap design, again attributed to your work....

Again, thanks for the wealth of info and I will supply my own when I get the chance.

Jon

Thanks for the compliments Jon, I'm honored you decided to start posting in my thread!

1. Glad I could help with the cockpit!

2. I want to see the cowl flap design, I'm considering several ideas for mine. I'm going to have mine temperature activated.

3. I have my own drawings of the modified Royal Corsair wing based on a rough set of Earl Aune drawings I have for the wing folding. My advice is don't use air to operate those, use sail winch servos. As far as outer flap control I am going to do what Vought did, nothing else would look right anyway. That's what I always recommend, do what the original designer did, or as close as you can get it! There is no need to have aluminum and bushings and all that, PC board material is more than sufficient for anything with an 85" wing and below. Only metal I'm using in my folding wing design on my 82" wingspan model is in the latch, it will be steel.

4. Need help building a tail wheel let me know.

Welcome aboard Jon, let's see some pictures now!

That's exactly the information I was after. Thanks heaps!

I've already run air lines for the gear doors and sheeted the wing but I'll now try and thread a servo wire thru. It looks like I will be able to get some building time in this weekend so hope to get some door action happening now with no strained servos.

Glad I could help with that great project Richard! Almost have my doors done, will be posting updates soon, they work very smooth. I'll provide a video so you can all see them work!

Dion

Hi Dion

Got my doors working too and no buzzing! I had these 4 micro servos sitting round in an old own design 1/4 scale Christen Eagle where I had one on each aileron. They weight only 1/3 oz each and 15oz torque. Using the rule of thumb of needing 8oz torque per square decimeter (sorry for the mixed units) they should be plenty strong enough and lighter than one standard servo.

The other pic is my first thinking on getting the cowl flaps working. I'm thinking of springing the flaps open and using the cable to pull them in. Not sure how to do the infill bits between the flaps.

The picture that shows how the rear canopy track sharply kicks is an interesting one. I imagine it is like this to lift the canopy first so the canopy frame can clear the rear decking before sliding back. As Brian has found, this kick needs to be copied to get the 'sit' of the canopy right when open and also to give clearence to a scale canopy frame.

This and the cowl flaps are the next issues to be tackled. I will also have to rethink the best way to retract the tailwheel. I've never had any major problems with air systems but the servo route would be simpler.

Thanks again
Richard
