I'm not sure if this was mentioned in this thread but I just started making my field box from hell yesterday and was unsure about what fuel cell to use because of the discussion about the plastic breaking down in different containers. I tried using a regular glow fuel container laying on it's side with a glow fuel stopper from an unused fuel tank. It's not leaking and it only took 10 minutes to set up. Only problem that I can forsee is refilling will have to be done through the fuel pump which will take a little longer than opening the top of the jug and pouring it in from a fresh bottle. It also fits in the top compartment without cutting up the tray. I put mine up there with the battery and cermark power panel because I hate getting on my knees to see the display on the panel. It might be a little top heavy that way but it's not that bad.

NIce JOb, I have the keter box from HELL. I love the box I made a cradle that mounts on the sides but my box wants to tip when on the grass.I need some type of outriggers or something to stablize ANY IDEAS??????????????????????

Yeah that definately works, but I bet it's going to be hard on your pump refilling it. My almost brand new pump died. I believe it was from filling my one gallon container up so many times. It does take a little while for it to fill. If that cap isn't sealed, couldn't you just use a funnel? Maybe pinch the lines while you fill. Just a thought...

Aaron When I filled the jug with the pump, it took maybe 6 minutes. I have the vent going to a fuel dot and I'm working on another setup for the fill line because most of my planes have the GP fuel filler valve and the filler probe that you need for it, does'nt have any seal(o-ring) when not in use and I really need to keep the fuel airtight because I don't get too many flights in a week(wife and kids) so my fuel can sit for quite a while and I've got one gas plane(ultrastick G-23)and I was flying that a lot last season. So basically, when everything is stowed away I should just be able to pick the jug upright and refill it the conventional way(through the top)without fuel escaping through the vent or the fill line. marty P.S. Seems if you installed a 1/4 (or 3/8) inch tube bulkhead fitting next to the existing fuel tube pickups, you could gravity feed from a "Master" fuel jug, and it would likley fill the fuel cell pretty quickly (and not burn out a pump)... Am getting stuck on how to plumb the master tank simply... Cheers! Jim

Hi Folks, I have been following this thread for some time and decided to get into it myself, so I bought the Stanley box from Home Depot. Even though it cost ~$5 more than the Walmart version, it has a hard plastic cover over the lower external tool pouch while the Walmart version only has the fabric pouch exposed. Then I later went to Lowes and saw their version, since I could not decide, I bought theirs also. I figure I will keep both until I figure out which one will work best for me - maybe I will hang on to both. I am at the point where I am looking for a fuel storage system to fit the boxes and have found a couple of options. Dubro makes a 50 oz fuel tank P/N 692 and Great Planes makes a 64 oz fuel jug P/N JUG001 (both available from Tower). They both look to be possible candidates for the field boxes - you could install as many as you need to carry all of the different fuels. Another alternative for glow fuel storage is McMaster-Carr. Look for high density polyethylene jugs/jars and you will find numerous listings of various sizes that might be useable. If you stick with this material you can rest easy that the glow fuel will be compatible. Sullivan tanks are fabricated from high density polyethylene also. Hope this helps! Steve

I've seen them all... and no body.. and I mean no body has beat Jeffs box (post 334 pg 12) go to his link!. He also has a great idea of buying a jump starter and dismantling it into it's basic components. There are several on the market and range from $30.00 on up. You get: a high amp (15-18amp hours) 12V sealed battery, heavy duty on off switch, led lights, cig. lighter adapter, wall charger, and some have a volt meter and air compressor. If you bought all this stuff at the hardware and hobby shop separately it would cost considerably more money. Plus he has the "fuel cell" problem solved. Kudos to you Jeff. SkyBound

Test Day 23: This is going to be the conclusion of my Nitro Fuel/RTV Blue test. I am moving and must bring it to a close. As you will recall, I noticed the RTV breaking down in the fuel. White flakes were everywhere. When I uncovered the glass, the smell was bad. When I poured the glass out, I saw a lot of white liquid mixed with the blue fuel. Therefore, it is my belief that Nitro fuel and RTV Blue don't like eachother. I also believe this was the cause of another guys' fuel cell going bad. Also, keep in mind that this was a highly scientific test with a margin of error of only + or - 2%. So you can pretty much bet I'm in the ball park on this one. [:D] Look for my official findings to be published in next months Playboy magazine. They always have great articles!! [8\|]

Well, I'm moving in with my girlfriend so I'll be continuing her flying lessons. And, I'm going to buy a boat after I get my tax return and pay off my truck. Then it's time for that 110" Sig Rascal for aerial photography. After that... who knows... haven't thought any farther ahead. Oh yeah, I need to pick up another "field box from Hell" for her too. I wonder if they come in pink? It's rumored that there ARE in fact articles on the "filler" pages. I'm not sure if this is true or not as I have not looked at those pages. Perhaps this could be my next experiment. I fear I must go to the local nudy stand and investigate the possibility of so called "articles" in a Playboy magazine. This is probably just an urban legend so don't get your hopes up... Also, I've built a Giant Stinger so I think I am going to build a new Billy Hell field box for my gasser (and future ones to come). I'm getting into the giant scale gas planes. Looking back at some of the things ppl have done, it's sure to be a nice box. Thanks to all for the pics and posts.

Ok.. I think we should wake this thread open once and again. Im decided to make my own feild box and i just stright up dont know how to wire it. Here it is... I have the 7ah battery and i want to hook my field charger and power panel to it. But I want everything on one master switch i got from walmart. This switch has three prongs on it. Red (+), Load, and Ground (-). So do take all the red wires battery charger etc and hook it up to the read tab, then the black wires on the black tab? I orginally hooked it up that way but now the charger etc dont turn off? Bad switch or is there a better way to wire it up? I can fly planes, build planes, but ask me to rewire something.. RUN!!!!!!!

Bit late jumping on the band wagon, but Lowes still has the master craft box and I started modding that. I took apart my four year old portable power supply jump start system from Vector and bought myself a new one as a Christmas present... The 20Ah sealed battery and the walmart one gallon fridge container from rubbermaid fit nicely in the bottom with no movement. A metal cap from Hoppes #9 cleaner http://www.shootnhunt.com/hoppes_semi-auto_solvent.html fits the spigot thread like a glove. I bought the hobbico power panel http://www.hobbico.com/fieldequip/hcap0306.html and mounted it on the side. I used spade connectors going to banana plugs so I have a 200W mains source in the field and extracted the charging circuit from the jump starter and mounted it in a project box from radio shack. I didn't think my field box needed a tire compressor although I did keep it. Now onto the fuel setup. I am a noobie to glow and so am unsure on the fuel system path. Is this right. Fuel tank to pump to outside world for filling via a break point connected with fuel filter. Fuel tank (above fuel line - mountedn in cap) to outside world, with connection so I can connect to other line to create a return path and also to create a closed system? Pepboys and Sams club currently have a jump starter for $44 and $50 respectively. It has a 19/20Ah battery also. Thanks for the ideas! Andy

well, I wanted tobuy a sig mini boss field box and someone I know suggested the mastercart box and I ended up with one, and tossed around some ideas on the r/c chat and after working on it for a while I found this thread which was nice to read some ideas on... anyway, I ended up with a 19ah motorcycle battery in the bottom, a power pannel that I made on one end and a quick field charger on the other. I cut out the tray to fit a standard 1 gallon jug. it's not quite done yet, need to finish it up this weekend. I was working on the box until 2:30am this morning and went back at it around 9:30.... installed a small fan in the bottom to vent any flammable gasses from the bottom and help keep the charger cool. I installed a tamiya connector on the fuel pump so I can completely detatch the lower tray if I need to, installed all the hot wiring. I need to get some angle aluminum I have at work to make little stops to keep the battery in place, and I also need some sort of fittings to mount to the side of the box for the fuel entry/exit.
