I just started reading this thread (thru the 2nd page) and noticed that it sounds like there was some question on future availability of the Black & Decker boxes from Home Depot. I may be asking a question answered if I had read on but anyhow does anyone know if they are still available. This thread has obviously interested me since I need one. Thanks
Ron

Billy, I think it sounds pretty unlikely, it's just a matter of -what-if-
To be honest, I'm more concerned about some arcing event while it's in the garage, which is adjacent to my children's rooms.

I can't decide if I want to seal up the fuel compartment and ventilate it, or hang either the battery, or the fuel, off the side.

The only reason I asked if the vapor floats or sinks is to consider it for venting.

Sands, at least around here, home depot seems to run out, then get a batch in, if you have several home depots around check them all; I've seen them recently. I actually went with a different style of tool box, simply because it can fit under the bed cover in my pick-up without being disassembled; but I'm pillaging all the ideas from this thread.

I have seen them at Target and a few other stores. I'm going to grab an extra one next time I see one.

Thanks Billy for this great idea. However I did modify it a bit which I see everyone else has too. I will include 3 pics so this won't be too long. Now all I need is more stuff to go in it and need to put a few stickers on it .

Ever need a Windsock at a field that doesn't have one? Well now you can bring your own.

My newly finished Bill Hell flight box (no, Billy, I won't sue you if it blows up )

Fuel and battery in bottom box, separated by hardboard panel. Fuel has a vent line that is cutoff when fill hose is stored (I can actually lie this box on its back without spillage). Master switch with homemade voltage meter (3 red LEDs), field battery charger and fuel switch make up the front (I'm still waiting for a prettier fuel pump switch).

I cut out tray for fuel jug, but after reinforcing with hardboard (painted to match), it's very sturdy.

I cut out the tray of the top box as well for radios, and will add padding soon (although the radios are nice and snug already).

That is a beautiful box. My wife got my box for me for Fathers day. She drove back from the store and I was in the drive way with a Dremmel tool hacking it to pieces. She thought I was crazy. I just showed her all the great boxes everyone has put together and now she doesn't think I'm as crazy as I was. Thanks guys!

raven7, Cannot agree with you more. He has definitely giving us all a great idea. Would like to see how many others have this field box. Maybe the mods can create a section called field boxes and give others a chance to post what they have in them, how they are rigged and what kind they are.

Anybody have any ideas for mounting the gallon fuel container in the outside?

This is actually my plan. I haven't yet done it, but I think aluminum plate/sheet could be bent into a shelf that bolts to the side of the box. Then a strap could go around the jug to hold it secure. You might need some side supports on the shelf between the bottom and the bracket to keep the shelf from bending under the weight of the fuel.

I just down in the basement lookin at the box and I think I got it. Well I know I'm not using the power cord holder on the back, so one could take that off and get some aluminum and make a basket that hangs off the back. And you could put a gallons on the back.

I'm also planning to use sheet metal. I'm going to bend and debur to make a platform that extends out the side; I'm just looking for somebody to make the bend for me, I have not looked too hard yet...

Post 151 asked if glow fumes were lighter or heavier than air. It is just like gasoline - heavier. I found out the old fashioned way, used some remaining in the bottom of a jug to start an outdoor fire. When lit when "whump" just like gasoline in a spreading circle at the base of the fire but was not quite as violent as gasoling.
