I'll be ready to cover my first kit by next week. I haven't done this before and want it to go as painless as possible. I decided to use ultracote because it is supposed to be easier. I was looking on towers site and saw a wood pecker that is supposed to aid in covering. Has anyone used this thing and is it worth getting?

I use mine all the time and it just take getting use to it. Make sure you don't go deep with the holes and then lightly sand and blow the dust off, works fine for me.

The woodpecker was voted the most useless tool on rec.models.rc.air at one point if I recall, it was a while ago. Don't use it. Faye Stilley, who writes books on covering and does fabulous work, doesn't use it. Buy a nice iron like the Coverite one, a sock for it, and 100 single edged razor blades and you're ready to go. A trim iron is real nice to have also, if you have an extra $15.

however, it is fantastic for building spads. allows the glue to form rivets in both surfaces being glued.

Works great for laminating plywood for bulkheads, etc. Epoxy flows into the holes and makes like little nails...needed a piece of 1/4 inch one late night for a firewall............used two 1/8 pieces. Worked great, when the plane went in firewall was the only piece still intact.

They work great for what they are made for . Don't expect the impossible. If you use sealer they are great for what they are designed
