How old was the Aeromaster in the photo? I agree that it was silk and some form of paint, but strangely enough, Super Monokote was introduced in March 1968.

The photo looks better on my computer than the actual magazine cover does in my hands. Blown up, you can really examine the craftmanship of the structure and the finish.

The Aeromaster was started in late 1964 or early 1965.

Not only is that dope, it was brushed on. No spray gun.

The clear dope was from Waterlac, another company intown .
The color was Aero Gloss.
The real remarkable thing was the doped finish on Lou's plane was light. Probably lighter than Super Monocoat.

The method he showed me was to clear the woodwork and sand many times untill the grain was filled and the dope was shiny.
He didn't use sanding sealer or talc.
Only use thinned dope, never thick unthinned dope.

Cover with silk and again thinned dope until the weave was filled. Wet sand and a couple more coats of clear with sanding in between coats.
Add colors and a couple coats of clear and wet sand again, Rub with mild rubbing compound and wax.

A friend of mine is looking for an Aeromaster kit...is there a newer issue kit available?

Seems to me that I recall reading somewhere that someone was making a new kit of the Aeromaster? (or am I imagining things? )

No new kit that  I know of yet, we just finished up mine yesterday, went out to the field to maiden it and something went bad wrong as it smashed into the pit area fence and ripped part of the lower wing off! looks like we will be able to repair it but still sux! Nice plane though!

The Aeromaster comes up on the Auction site quite frequently.

Kit variations.
Original Aeromaster... 48 inch wings, ailerons bottom wing only.
Aeromaster Too .........same as above with the addition of a second wing plan to allow for longer wings 52 inches.
And / or to sweep the lower wing back if desired.

Super Aeromaster By Great Planes.... Wing attachment changed to bolts. Cabane struts changed.
Nose shortened to allow for larger motor and plastic or metal motor mounts to be firewall mounted.
Wing structure changed for bolt mounts. Plastic cowl and wheel pants included with kit.

Here is a lazer cutter that advertises the "parts" to help you make one from your own plans.
I think this is a short kit only. I don't know anyone that has built this one.

I just purchased an Aeromaster kit here on the marketplace for $150.00 and plan on building it over the next couple of months.  I have built two of these previously, however that was twenty years ago or more.  I'm glad to find that there are so many fans of Andrews model kits.  I learned to fly on I think it was an x-ray,  then went on to a Sportmaster which I flatspinned into a lake after putting floats on it.  Hopefully I will post some photos when I finish with the Aeromaster.  Later guys.

I Got the fuse framed and trying to decide which wing cinfiguration to build. This is the super aeromaster version from great planes. Im leaning toward the swept upper and lower which is also the larger wingspan for both wings. I plan on using a 100 saito. ive never owned one or flown one so if any of you veteran aeromaster guys are still on the up and up please give me some input. This has been a textbook build so far, hate to make a mistake. Thanks

pd1,

In your opinion, which wing configuration flies the best? Besides the Aeromaster I'm refurbing, I just got a NIB kit. So I'm curious what you think.

The engine and wing questions have been addressed earlier. I suggest you read previous posts in order to get a broad perspective of opinion.

Hi fb,
I still think it's just personal preference. My next one will be with both wings swept back and 52 inch span.
The one I'm flying now is swept top and straight bottom.

I think it's especially pretty with the two long wings swept back. That's how I'll build mine. Nice pic!

Have you flown it yet? It should fly inverted with just a touch of down trim.

It flies wonderful. I ended up moving the bottom wing up a 1/4 of an inch and setting it to 0 degrees incidence. It has much better stall chacteristics and snaps better now. When I recived it it had been through a mid-air and was going to the trash.

Would any one happen to have a set of plans that are on CAD or adobie that they would be willking to share? Im thinking about building another that would be much lighter than my repair job that I did. The one I currently have is at 9.75 pounds. Its not a floater at all but still flyes good.

I can think of many cheaper ways to have one than to pay $325 skins for an old kit with brown plans

Sure you can...............and watch as people crawl all over themselves to buy this..someone will buy it eventually..brown paper, silverfish and all.
Having money doesn't necessarily mean having sense either.

It's been 40 yrs since I've seen a silver fish. That would be a good way to get a colony started in your home?
