i just purchased a mugen seiki pro starter RII yesterday. i assembled the box, charged the batteries, and cranked my new nova rossi engine for the first time. i finished breaking in the engine, started running around a little, xperienced some chutch and shifting problems, then the starter box batteries died. i worked on the afore mentioned problems, recharged the starter box batteries, fueled up, and headed back outside to see if my work paid off. the starter box would barely turn the engine over, then SMOKE began to pour out of the holes in the top of the box! i opened the box in time to watch flames shoot out of one of the electric motors. i quickly unplugged the batteries, the connectors were hot. i double checked the battery connections, which will not allow being plugged backwards. the starter wheel was spinning in the right direction. what the heck caused this to happen?

First, it sounds like your batteries are maybe not getting a full charge. If you are running 2 - 7.2 volt packs with at least 1500 mah they should last all day, even if you are having trouble starting the engine. I would check your charging process to ensure that they are getting fully charged.

As for the starter box catching fire, I would check all connections and make sure you do not have a short somewhere. I have seen batteries go up in flames many times because wires barely touch, or something you don't see right off. I would also make sure that all your connections are soldered together and not twisted or just taped.

You mentioned about the possibility of the wires being wired backwards and that the box does not allow that to happen. That would not make a difference because the motors would just turn the opposite direction.

If you bought the box and did not wire it, send it back to the manufacturer or take it back to the hobby shop where you bought it. Replacement motors can be found just about anywhere on the web, it is best to replace them with the same type of motor if you can find it, the manufacturer can help you with that if you are unsure of what type and so forth.

Goodluck
