I have a big time problem with my XTM 24.7 motor I am running on my Ofna Dominator. Wondering if anyone knows how to fix this problem. Basically I can't even get through a tank of fuel without the glow plug burning out. And when I say that I mean when I take the plug out the entire coil seems to be gone. It's either blowing it out or burning it out or something. I had the engine tuned pretty good and it used to run fine. Temps have stayed near the 200 degree mark even after running hard for long periods. It is nice and punch lean on the top end. It does not idle very well, but runs with the throttle open nice. Some facts are that I use Trinity 20% nitro fuel. I have been running OS #8 plugs. Also tried a few others, but the OS #8 seemed to work ok. When the problem started I changed between cold, medium, and hot plugs with no luck. This problem started last weekend and it's driving me crazy. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

I am on my second 24.7 now, and a buddy has the Pro - I have never had any problem like this, but it definately sounds too lean to me....put it this way - too rich is never going to melt the coil on a glow plug Have you tried resetting your needles and re-tuning? Or at least crank the HSN out a 1/4 turn or more and just try running it like that for a couple of tanks (if it makes it that long!)

certainly running too lean, dont relie on temp alone or visible smoke as a guidline, they are good points to watch, but you can still run too lean and have those two look ok.

If I am not mistaken you should be running a cold plug in a big block with nitro 20% or higher???

Hot plug for low-nitro applications
Medium Hot for informal racing and sport use.
Cold Plug for competitive racers and higher nitro fuel mixtures.

Diagnosing engine problems on-line is nearly impossible, its something each one of us must learn in order to fully enjoy the nitro experience
but I'll offer a couple of ideas.

It may have sprung a leak. Try reseating the carb, tightening all the
screws/bolts and install a new plug, only I dont think thats the problem.
You really need to dial in the tuning, that may be a big contributing factor.
I've seen rich motors pop plugs just as you described, and rather quickly I might add.
Describe the smoke trail from idling to wot and in between, its one way for us on-line to know what your current condition might be, rich or lean.

Just for the record, the 3 XTMs I was speaking about before were all using OS #8's as well. I tried a few different plugs with my first 24.7 but found the #8 or the ODonnell 77 to be the best - hot or cold? I have no idea, but they start good, run good, and last a long time, which is enough for me
