Putting the final touchs on my Funtana. Mine is powered by an MVVS 26 gasser with the MVVS in cowl muffler. This motor was in a Goldberg Sukhoi with tuned pipe. It performed better than scale but came out at 14.5#. I'm hoping the Funtana is around 11#. I've seen so many fly at my field that I had to get one.
I hope to maiden it in two days. Tomorrow I'll start it and make sure the fuel system and the radios work.
I'll try to post a couple pics tomorrow.

    hi Everyone,
I have a f90 with 'INVERTED" YS 140 Fz almost completed.
Has anyone used the NMP Muffer set up in the F90 with this configuration ...if so did you use the inline type or sports type NMP muffler and what exhaust adapter was used?
or could you could direct me to a post or pic showing the configuration
    Are the nmp mufflers ok?
    Thanks for any help.
    Regards
    Hanns

    Davebart,

I know if you look in the Funtana 100X thread you'll find that someone installed a Zanoah 20 in it.

    Regards

    hi,
Quite a few used Ys140 with 18x6 wide APC prop....need to use throttle management though. need longer main gear...i am using the old Bolly CF Extra main gear....fit perfectly and less that 1/2 the weigh of the gear supplied.
Any one use the NMP mufflers before?

Thanks Scooterpilot. That was one of the next places to go since the Z 20 is so new. I have a 1.50 Saito in it now and wanted to try gas. this will be my first gas plane.

I flew my F90 for the first time yesterday. I'm using a Moki 1.35 on 5% nitro (Model Technics 'Formula Irvine') and a 17x6 prop. The engine was recommended by the chap from Just engines who sadly passed away last year.

All I can say is 'wow'. This is my first real experience with a 3D aircraft and I have to say that the threads here on RCU have been a god-send.

Just as TManiaci recommended, I used around 50% rates and 30% expo, and 70% expo for the 3D settings. I programmed the aileron differential as per the manual and also set up some flaps for the landings.

The take off was text book perfect, the plane was perfect and required ZERO trimming whatsoever. You know that anxious feeling you get when you first put a new plane in the air? Multiply that by a factor of 10 and that's pretty much how I felt, because it's been at least 3 years since I've flown anything fixed wing and people kept telling me - 'oh, you got to be careful with that F90, tricky plane to land, drops a wing etc blah etc....'

Well I'm happy to report the plane was awesome. I'm no 3D pilot, but I've got a good feeling that I'll be a much better flyer come the end of the summer. I put the CG at just a shade in front of 7" and it flies lovely like that. Crisp, smooth and responsive but without being twitchy. The engine could pull vertical at 1/2 throttle no probs and lasted a good 20 minutes on the tank, at which point I decided to bring it in.

A slight drama unfolded as we realised the main landing gear had lost a bolt and skewed around by 90 degrees - as in TOTALLY perpendicular to the direction of motion. So I had to make this a good landing first time. After thanking the supportive folk who gathered to watch me destroy my F90, I switched on the flaps and cursed quietly to myself. I flew as slow as I dared, brought it in nice and flat and made sure that I cut the throttle as soon as the first wheel pant touched down. The Funtana came to a pretty smooth stop considering, and other than a slightly bent aluminium landing gear, nothing was broken either - not even the wheel pants. Incredible. The entertainment was much appreciated by the other club members who gave me a small cheer.

Performance-wise, I really cannot fault this aircraft's maiden flight. It's one of the easiest planes I've ever flown. I can't wait to fly it properly.

Funny you should mention this. One of my mates has a F90 and has had the same thing happen to him.

    TWICE.

The first time this happened we were all helping to clear a spot in the tall grass when one of the guys noticed that the gear was rotating and appeared to be unscrewing the remaining bolt! My mate then flew snaproll after snaproll, which completely unscrewed the other bolt, allowing the gear to fall free. He was then able to belly-land the Funtana on the grass. No damage besides a broken prop.

The second time this happened he applied te same solution - multiple snaprolls till the gear fell off, then a nother smooth belly landing.

Turns out that he used a slightly undersized bolt to replace the first one that fell out. Both were locktited in place, but were no match for the vibration of his YS 1.20.

He has since replaced both bolts with longer ones, and has bent over the piece of each bolt that protruded above the blind nuts. They will NEVER come out again.

BTW - a Funtana with no landing gear looks a LOT like a P-51.

    Davebart:

Thanks for the thumbs up! Cheers.

    Visioneer_one:

    It's not just me then!!

I used the screws that came with the kit and blue locktite (hand tool friendly stuff). But I suppose vibrations/oil can and will degrade it. I definitely don't want that to happen again. Highly embarrassing, though the flight itself was superb for a maiden. Most of the guys didn't believe me.

During the last 5 minutes of the flight, I had tried to roll the main gear free, but it just wouldn't budge. I didn't want to fly the F90 without ever having tried at least some aerobatics before putting it into a bin bag, so I tried various rolls, loops - but still nothing. Even upon landing, the gear remained stubbornly in place, the pant actually bending right under itself, fortunately acting like a skid in the process. I believe this prevented major damage.

Speaking of which, when I attempted to bend it back into place, the aluminium gear simply broke. So now I 'have' to upgrade to some nice carbon fibre landing gear!! Do you guys have any recommendations? I've been looking at Graph Tech stuff, they look very nice, but in the short term I was wondering if I could direct fit a Funtana 100X CF main gear?

    Regards

    Horatio
