Probably going to embarass myself...

Any tricks to filling sealed tanks? - I just bought a .25 size edge... very cute, quick and flies well... The only problem is when I try to fill her up.

I disconnect the line connected to the exhaust and leave it hanging. I connect my manual hobbico hand pump to the line that goes to the carb. I start to pump and fuel immediately starts shooting out of the exhaust line. If I crimp the exhaust line and fill the tank (about 3/4 of the way) and uncrimp the line almost all the fuel shoots out under pressure.

BTW... the fuel cell has been trapped in the fuse with canned foam. no way to get it out without damaging the fuse.

what can I do.. is there a trick that I'm not seeing. or am I destined to be covered in fuel all the time... :mad:

In order for fuel to shoot out of the vent line it has to be reaching the level of the vent - that means either the tank has been: installed upside down with the vent turned down instead of up, OR the vent tube has rotated so that it's pointing down inside the tank, OR you're fueling on the vent side and overflowing from the pick-up side. All these scenarios are unlikely, but posible and No, you're not embarasing yourself. Thanks for asking or we'd have nothing to talk about :D :D

P.S. As I type this, my wise *** son said to just turn the plane upside down to fuel it and see what happens. Jeeezz!

I have probably built 20+ planes, and I just finished one that had this problem. I mistakenly hooked the exhaust line to carb, and the fuel line to the exhaust. It did exactly what yours does, and once switched worked fine. Even with my experience, we all can make mistakes, I actually hope you made this mistake, as it is easy to correct.

I tried your suggestions out this weekend in a controlled test environment... (my garage) No Luck!

I was wondering if there is a fueling system that connects both the carb line and exhaust line to control fuel cell pressure. (i.e. something that will allow the pressure to escape but not the fuel)

there has to be an explanation for this. Something is not right.
cut me some slack I drew this in 2 mins, but is your tank set up like the following? The symptoms you describe would also occur if you made the exhaust portion in the tank of tubing, and not brass. Then even if you flipped it over it would act just as the carb line and remain in the fuel...so I dunno :confused:

I'm with Arfin' around. There's got to be something closing off the tank or the vent line that should be open to the atmosphere. Perhaps the fuel line to the carb is kinked flat or the klunk has doubled back on itself so that fuel is not actually filling the tank and air venting out the other line. - It may be time for opening her up and looking if you can't hear the klunk moving...

I did it that way... I've always done it that way... but I can't check to see if somethings broken because I sealed the entire front of the airplane with foam... (I used to love that stuff, its light and it really strengthens the plane.)
