hello!
i have done a lot of progress on this bird, and now i decided to stay away from PICA forever! the design is too old fashioned, out of scale and to be hones, left a lot for the builder to improve. i rather spend my time ona good scale plan than on this sportscale affairs, but, this is my job, s let´s keep on glueing and sanding.....
on these pictures you will see how i have arranged the servos on the tail end, 2 jr 331 micro, with around 43Oz each, later when servos are attached i will cover them with a plywood skin bolted cover.
so far i have finished bottom sheeting, tail bottom laminate and enclosed a phenolic tube for servos wiring

as for the nose retract, i have to do a lot of changes and guesswork, as the plans aren´t full scale regarding retracts, also, the part´s won´t fit the century retracts.
i have moved the nose leg to a (more) scale position, also, as i have to spread the engine mount beares, the l/g fixture had to move as well. as you can see in the pictures, i have done a cut on front former to pass the gear and to clear the pull pull sistems for steering, that will be later routed through a nyrod tube, because it have to go deep and back in the fuse.

back to the wing retarcts, after gluein all of the beares on the already cut positions, i received the whells only to find out that i had to remove and glue them deeper to accomodate the "fat" legs.the second picture shows how the various parts goes around the wheel(because the plan and the manual are really a mess to understand!!
the cross members between the ribs on the third picture are the mounts for the servo covers. definitively o won´t use picca´s bellcrank approach! therell be one servo for each surface, laid sideways on the inside wing skin.
now the wing is fully sheeted and i´m working on the hinging, more later

hello friends! now the things have speed up a little! have decided to use the blue box pilot for her, just ordered.
i have done the sheething, servo boxes/covers and landing gear instalation and covers.
also have substituted the odd plastic belly pan that weight a ton and won´t fit properly for a wooden cosntruction, took me several hours, but now really looks good!

have instaled the BGX and to make it fit inside the cowl i had to turn the hed on the lathe to reduce it´s size a little! all retracts are ok, have done the inside lining with 1/64 ply, and have used a nyrod tube to route the pull pull sistem for the nose gear steering.

also have installed the hinges on the flaps, wich i have hinged on the bottom and rounded the leading edge to looke more scale, then finished the top and aileron hinge gaps with 1/32 ply.
have drilled wing bolts attachments and glued the stabs, after checking the incidence(dead straight!)
jus decided to stay away from the manual, that sometimes proved to be harmfull!!

Dave Platt has an interior kit for the T-28. You might take a look at that as an option. I don't think the scale is that far off the Pica. Chances are, he probably designed the Pica bird anyway.

I think you will find his website at www.daveplattmodels.com

There is NO resemblance to Dave Platt's 1/6th scale. Dave's is as close as to being truly scale as possible. The Pica kit is not even close. Besides that the person who made Dave's interior kits has died ! They are no longer available.

hello! back to the forum! i have made great progress on building! now i´m onto finishing process!
1- as far as i remember, you can´t find her at ARF form, probably you will need to build one yourself or comissiona a pro to do that!
2- yes, pica only "ressembles" the T 28, as purist i am really sad to do a poor scale job, anyway, i do thar for living, so i can´t decline the job. indeed Dave´s model is a masterpiece, but the owner of the plane want´s a weekend flyer that looks ABOVE average models, so he wants this one to be really well built, not for competition....
3- i have bid and won, at ebay an old pica cockpit kit! just waiting to arrive here in Brazil!(thanks to a forum reader, that told me about the bid)
now, let´s go back to work!

WOW, I just ordered a T-28B 1/5 scale kit I got from E-bay and am excited and a little concerned after reading this post. I am still up in the air on an engine, but would like to go the gas route and not nitro. Also, how about the retract system? I was going to order the Robart retracts and wanted to know more about the fussy nose gear installation. Any ideas would be VERY helpful and this is a GREAT post. Thanks guys, can't wait to get started....

here i am again!
have done the wing l/e extension using 1/64 ply, btw, the template furnished with the kit manual is useless!
next, finished sheeting belly part with 1/32 balsa, then general sanding and finally started glassing her with 3/4 oz fiber and epoxy resin.
also, have decided to make the tail parts t/e more scale like, thinning it, because it was a 3/4 t/e, to thinner to 1/32 i have unsheeted everything, sanded the 1/8 iner sheet to zero on both sides, then sheeted again with 1/16 balsa, then capped with basswood for strenght.
now looks good albeit the work was big....
