Right, i got my charger on saturday, went for the ripmax, multi Q tripple charger, (got it from al's hobbys, what an *inconsiderate person*, he didn't have the time of day for me, just 'cos i was asking which one to get, i had to decide on my own, and he almost smashed the glass counter slamming something down he had in his hand because i asked for a RX charger lead, he gave me a TX lead, and someone else had to get the right one for me (behind the counter), they were very 'sharp' with me at the show when i bought the radio gear off them too... live and learn i guess, i'll be buying from modelsport from now on),

Anyway, this charger does 1 amp for TX batteries (7 to 10 cells i think), variable amps upto 4 for RX batts (4 to 7 cells), and 1.2 amps fixed for the glow start batt,

The glow start is a timed charge at 1.2 amps for 20 minutes (the others are delta peak), and i have a 4 amp hour NIMH battery to charge, the handbook with the charger says that it will put in about 400 milliamps in a charge cycle,

Can someone tell me how best to charge this battery??, should i discharge it fully, then charge it 10 times?, or can i measure the voltage and figure out how much more it needs?, (got a multimeter that has a setting for testing ni-cads, that puts the battery under a small load),

Or would i be best off getting another charger just to charge this battery, it's not going to be discharged that much usualy, its use is an inteligent glow driver batt., so it should last weeks providing the engine will idle with out glow assistance,

Any help greatly recieved.

Gazz

Are you sure about that? A large 12 volt gelcell battery is usually in the 7 AH range so that must be some NiMH to be 4 AH. If it actually is, you better get the charger for that battery.

Yup, its a C sized battery, 4000 Mah,

i have a 5AH 2 volt cyclon battery somewhere too, but thought this C sized batt would be easier to find a place to strap put it in the model, i never had the charger for the cyclon battery, being a lead type batt, but i used as a glow start for 2 months with out it needing a charge, i'm hoping the NIMH will last as long between charges, and i can put up with re-setting the charger 10 times.

I'm now wondering if NIMH batteries pull charge current like lead acid batteries??, i.e when i charge the battery in the camper, or even a car battery using a car battery charger, the ammeter drops as the battery charges,

does the same happen with NIMH batts??, i.e could i just keep putting the 4000Mah battery on repeated 20 minute charges untill it stops pulling 1.2 amps??, (i.e the needle drops a bit)
at the moment its still letting a full 1.2 amps into the battery according to the chargers meter, will this drop when the battery dosent want any more?, or dosent this happen with this kind of charger (FET), or battery chamistry.

Gazz,
The best way to charge your battery would be at a rate of 400mA for around 18 hours. Discharge it to around 1V and repeat charge/discharge process two more times to get the full potential out of the battery.
As I do not have any experience with the charger you purchased I cannot comment on how it works. Most of the sophisticated chargers will charge at a constant current and vary the voltage to compensate during the charge process. As a battery becomes charged it's internal voltage level will increase. If the charger does not increase it's voltage level accordingly, the current being put into the battery will decrease. Dry cell chargers do not work the same as wet cell chargers. (Constant current vs. constant voltage.)
A simple charger can be purchased at Radio Shack which should work just fine if used in conjunction with a timer. If you have used your battery frequently and want to put a 'boost' charge in it go ahead and use your Ripmax. (I have a little GlowBee charger that does the same thing-exactly. I only use it once in a great while since I just hook up my glow starter to one of my SuperNovas and let it peak charge. Charging my 2300mAH C size NiCD glow-starter with the Glowbee is not much fun.)

I don't know if I have helped you any but my advice is to get an appropriate charger for your cell.

I'm sure I will be corrected if I've given inaccurate information.

Good luck,
Jeff
