I have a new RCV 1.20 and have just started bench running it. I have tried a zinger 20 x 12 and a APC 20 x 12. I carfully made sure the props were balanced. With iether prop there seems to be excessive vibration compared to my Saito 1.20 or other 4 stroke engines, especially at lower speeds. Is this normal????

Hi
Firstly, the torque from the RCV is higher than a normal engine because of the 2:1 gearing. This means that unless the engine is setup correctly and installed properly vibration can be a problem. As you are obviously experiencing excessive vibration there would seem to be a problem as this is not 'normal'.
Please also note that the engine does require approx 1 hours running in time in order to perform at its optimum.

There are two main causes of vibration 1) the gears are not adjusted correctly creating backlash or 2) the engine &/or its ancillary products are not set-up correctly.
If it turns out to be cause 1, we would need you to send your engine to our US service centre to be adjusted. This is not the most likely cause so before that we would need to ensure you are following all the RCV recommendations:

If you could answer the questions below this will give us a better insight – if you prefer, you can reply in private to sales@rcvengines.com email.
1) When did you purchase your RCV120-SP?
2) What is the serial number of your engine?
3) What fuel are you using?(please state % of Nitro, Oil and Castor?
4) What glow plug are you using?
5) Did the engine come with a metal backplate?
6) Have you used this to mount the engine?
7) Is your test stand solid?
I look forward to your reply. Then we can resolve this issue promptly.
Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Best regards
Laurenne Mansbridge

I engine was purchased about 2 months ago but not run until recently.

Serial number 04-484 (hand written on UPC code on box)

OS 4 stroke plug (No8)

Morgan Omega castor/synthetic blend fuel have also tried "Cool Power" all synthetic blen no difference. 15% nitro

I am using the supplied mounting plate

Test stand is solid. and solidly mounted to a heavy bench.

There is a very small amout of play in the gears that translets to less than 1/8" inch slop at prop tip.

This may be normal for this type of engine but as this is my first RCV engine I have no basis for comparison.

Hi again.
You seem to being doing everything right, although the fuel is not our recommended fuel. We recommend using 10% Nitro, 15% oil (including a maximum of 6% castor) . Assuming your fuel is similar in composition this shouldn't be a problem.

In terms of what is normal, the RCV engines do have twice the amount of tortional vibration than normal engines, so you would notice some difference. This should not be 'excessive' though. If there is any backlash in the gears this can create a clattery sound and this could make the vibration seem much worse.

We are happy to take a look at the engine for you at our US service centre to check the setup and fine-tune as necessary. Please email sales@rcvengines.com and we can give you a warranty returns number and information on our service centre. Please note that we must have received you warranty registration form before we are able to look at the engine. If you have not already sent us this information, please either fill in the on-line warranty registration form on www.rcvengines.com or include all the details in your email to us.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Laurenne

I am a long time user of these engines. Your engine should not vibrate excessively. They are smooth runners.

You say you are using an OS #8 plug. This is not the correct plug. The correct plug is the OS "F" plug. If you use the #8 plug it will not idle well. It will also vibrate more at low speed than if the correct plug "F" plug is used.

The engine should have been shipped with a new OS "F" plug loose in the box in the usual OS blister pack, ready for installation. If you don't have it, please purchase one of these plugs and install it. Your engine should then perform to specification.

Some users report success with Fox Miracle or Hanger 9 "Super" 4 stroke plugs. I have tried them. I find that the recommended OS "F" plug still works best.

RCV only endorse the use of OS "F" plugs in their motors.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks Fiery

I missed the fact Gunner was using an OS 8 glow plug - I simply saw OS Four-Stroke plug so assumed he was using the OS 'F'.

Anyway you are completely correct, RCV have tried numerous plugs and have found that best plug to use is an OS 'F'.

These plugs are not generally included in the price of an RCV, however some outlets, including RCV direct do choose to supply one with the engines.

Thanks again.

Laurenne

How is the compression on your engine ? Do it seam a little Hi or is it normal ? Try to run some Omega 5% and see if it makes a difference. If it still vibrates, contact me or Laurenne here at this string or dirrectly. Also make sure that the engine is propperly broken in at the 1500 to 2500 RPM range, for at least an hour. I find that 90% of the engines I repair here in the US are distroyed in the first 2-4 hours of running time due to improper brake-in. Also you may contact me dirrectly (630) 321 0580 with any questions.
