That engine is one of the earlier Nelson racing motors. It is either the Formula one engine or the FAI F3D engine. The spinner looks rather large so I am guessing it is the F1 engine. The timing is different on the two engines. It would be wise to determine which engine it is before purchasing.

If it is the F1 motor it will need fuel with 60% nitro for any kind of performance. A prop would be 8.0 x 8.75 or something close to it. Some experimenting will be needed.

If it is the FAI F3D engine it will need a tuned pipe. It runs on 80% Methanol, 20% castor oil fuel. Prop would be 7 1/4 x 8.0 to start. Again some experimenting will be needed to determine the best combination.

Looks like F3D engine as it is not using crankcase pressure. Use either full wave pipe or muffled pipe, both available from Nelson in USA. APC make an injection molded carbon prop that works quite well, about 7.4 inch dia by 8 inch pitch. Muffler pressure to fuel tank needed to run engine.jh

After spending the weekend with Fred Burgdorf (APC). Some of us were flying FAI planes, and someone asked if we could use the Q40 black carbon injected prop that Fred sells. Fred was QUICK to say, that it would NOT be reliable enough at 28K to 34K rpm.

Just don't want to see anyone get hurt.

No, for FAI, I would say that continuous strand carbon fiber is the only safe choice for props. FAI engines put a lot of load on a prop as they come on and off the pipe as the needle is getting set. I don't think you'd get anything but continuous strand carbon to hold up. I know I wouldn't want to be near one with either a wood or APC Q40 prop. Also, the APC Q40 prop is too big for an FAI engine to get on the pipe.

If Fred can turn that QM40 prop at 28-34, he's got a much stronger F3D setup than I've ever seen. I was thinking more of using the quarter wave tuned pipe muffler from the original FIRE engine. Then, with a little nitro you have, in effect, a rear intake, rear exhaust Q40 engine and Freds prop should work fine. If a full wave pipe is used instead, it would need to be a fair bit longer than the F3D pipes and I very much doubt it would get anywhere near 28k.jh

Bruce DeChastel (www.bigbruceracing.com) sells a nice integrated prop/spinner that's molded from CF, with continuous fiber in the blades. The spinner is 1.5" diameter. The prop is about a 7-1/4" x 7-1/2", just needs to have the flashing removed and final balancing and it's good for 27-28K, just what you need with the Nelson F3D engine. It's not cheap, but if you set it so it stops horizontal at shutoff, you won't need more than one.

To mold your own, you'll need a roll of 50,000-strand CF tow, some good laminating resin, and Harry Higley's book, "Master Modeling". He has a chapter on molded props that is worth its weight in GloBee plugs.
