I know NOTHING at all about Q500 planes so I need help. I need something cheap and easy to build. And fast. I have a TT.36(hot) I want to put on it. What plane should I get?

Go to Q-500 Planes for a list of what's available.

For that engine, and given your other specs, I would suggest a Lanier Predator with a (sorry guys, gotta reuse this one ) Hayes AL-25 Long Mount - This .25 to .36 compatible engine mount has the same firewall bolt pattern as the Jett Engineering 4 bolt conforming Q-500 backplate mounts and the Nelson Q-500 backplate mount. This makes it possible to set up a Quickie airframe for multiple classes. Weight shifting will be required since the Slow Quickie engines are significantly lighter than the 428, 424, and APRA engines.

The AL-25 lets you put the engine forward some so that the nose moment doesn't change, and helps in balancing.

A link to the engine mount is on PylonWorld.com at Q-500 Engines.

Be aware that there is an "old" Predator and a "New" Predator. Make sure you get the new one, and save yourself some trouble. The new one has a 3/8" (approximately) thick firewall.

How did you find us?

I came over from the combat forum. I'm new there too but I have been flying combat for about 10 years. I usually hang out at the **** combat forum, it's pretty big.
I want to give this stuff a try though.

Since you've been flying combat, you're used to some of the more difficult aspects of racing that sport flyers have difficulty adjusting to:

1) Flying in close quarters with other planes.

2) Breaking planes.

3) Wake turbulence

#1 inevitably leads to #2 some of the time. Wake turbulence in the groove is something you get used to with some practice. With the really fast Q-500 and Q40 planes, you can even wind up in your own wake turbulence from the prior lap.

Get yourself a plane and get it in the air. After you get accustomed to the characteristics of the plane, start flying the course, or a simulated course.

Is there a club with any racing in your area? Where are you located?

There are two types of courses. The 2 pole course, and the 3 pole course that is used for AMA sanctioned events. With the 2 pole course, you fly in front of yourself. On the 3 pole course, you fly around yourself. Check out the RC Pylon Racing Rules for course dimensions and race procedures, as well as plane specifications.

I don't know of any clubs close by that has races but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I'll have to ask around. I'm from southwest Louisiana, Sulphur to be exact. I would guess that there is probably a lot of this going on in the Houston area, that's not very far. Thanks for all the info.
