Hi Guys,
Had a close call with my H9 Ultrastick when I noticed it was doing tight loops that I wasn't doing. I thought all was lost when for some reason that I still don't understand it straightened out and I was able to land without damage. There was no flutter but the plane does have over 300 flights on it.

The elevator servo would make a terrible grinding sound and then it would completely let go, that is the elevator could be moved with no resistance. Taking the servo apart I found the first gear in the train that meshes with the servo motor gear was half worn away. This gear is made of plastic but all the rest of the train is metal. Futaba says this is done to protect the servo motor but I would rather protect my plane than the servo. Futaba says all their servos, including the high-torque digitals, has a plastic gear in the train.

I replaced the one damaged gear in the servo and it flew fine today, but I am wondering if anyone makes a true all-metal gear servo. I sent an e-mail to JR but they have not replied as yet.

From Bluesky,
Since I posted this thread I have had a reply from JR concerning the availability of a true all-metal gear servo.

They state that at least one of the gears in the train has to be non-metallic to isolate RF noise from the servo motor. They state that no one makes a metal gear train without a nylon gear because it is absolutely required to prevent interference problems.

Live and learn. I thought this might be of interest to others that are having servo problems.

Very interesting, Bluesky. It kind of made sense to me for a minute until I realized all they would have to do is hard anodize the gears and they would be insulated from each other. The coating would probably outlast the servo, too.

Just a dumb hunch, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think it all boils down to ...... money.

I also had this happen a long time ago..When my elevator servo jammed itself while doing a loop....my first thought was that I had lost total control because the plane kept looping. I cut the throttle and quickly realized after a couple of mushy stalls, that I was able to control a slow desent using the throttle (Still had ailerons and rudder also) It was my very first trainer, which was still flyable after about a hundred or so flights and no less than 6 repairable crashes....Guess I just wore out that little servo...
anyhow I got lucky, and managed to land it without damage...
Had that old plane in my fleet for at least 9 years.. It was old, ugly, reliable and just plain fun to put around the sky every now and then.

Hitec metal gear servos also have one nylon gear.
