I'm just getting back into R/C. I loved it when I was a kid back in the sixties. Had a Goldberg Falcon JR with a cox .049 and a tube-style babcock single channel transmitter, some kind of new-fangled 9 volt transistor receiver, and a rubber-powered escapement for rudder control, which meant you could suggest the airplane go in a particular direction rather than being pure free-flight. 6 and 10 channel reed setups were for the hoi-polloi. Propo was just getting developed. You could build a Heathkit if you had money and were electronically literate.

Anybody out there old enough to remember some of this stuff. Finding 45 volt batteries was a thrill and Gawd were they expensive! Starters were unheard of. We were ALL on 27mhz (megacycle back then).

Spad,

You may want to contact Bob Harris of EarlyR/C Models. He kits the Jr. Falcon and has a very nice collection of the older radios and gear.

Take care,

Methinks I may have awoken ancient snow gods with this post. Right after I sent it we started getting what turned out to be two feet of snow. The power has been off for twenty-four hours, so I was running on an emergency generator. No computer power. Fridge, freezer and furnace only. Today the giant, solar-powered snow eater showed up, and by tomorrow we'll just have mud for the dogs to play in.

I was just curious as to how many old farts like me there are, returning to our childhood after doing the family, job, house, etc. I am amazed at the progress that has been made in this hobby.

Who'da thunk you could make a plane out of gutter pipe and beer signs?

I've got a Spectra 2 meter electric sailplane that doesn't really impress me, but I want to use for AP. I also build a trainer-type SPAD after rekitting a Superstar trainer. It's a hoot! I've got thousands of square miles of BLM land to fly on with only a couple (!) of mountains in the way

Gonnacrash: How about posting some pix of the really old stuff and we'll see if any of the younger kids can identify some of it.

My wife is the "Spudplanter". I plant SPADs.

To Spudplanter.

That sounds a really good idea. I am now retired and back to modelling. I was looking over the shoulders of some people in the Full Size Forum. The speciality was Aircraft Recognition. This was of great interest.

By the way, about getting older, getting old sucks but the alternative is not so attractive, so far anyway.

I KNEW someone would screw up the nick.

Actually, I tried the alternative a few years back. Woke up in intensive care with a quad bypass that started about four months of nightmares. Had a sign out front that said “Ambulance Parking Only”. I very suddenly quit being a type A personality. Did an early retirement, bought a motor home and boat, renewed my marriage, and just generally started enjoying life. Now I’m enjoying the airplanes that brought me so much joy in my childhood. Life is good. It’s just too short.

Remember the old saying… “Nobody ever dies wishing they spent more time at work!”

Talk about the old tube stuff? Here is a picture of a old unit that was built from a kit. The receiver has 1 tube as well as the transmitter. A tag on the transmitter says" I used 3ea 45 volt batteries in series" Sure would not want to fly on wet ground!!!

Welcome back Spadplanter.

While it sure is nice to make the old models I wouldn't go back to the old radios for a boatload of tea out of the Orient. I missed the tube days with my stuff but my wrestling with a Sterling Command Master RO set and a Controlaire Gallopoing Ghost set was quite enough. I've still got the GG set but it's a keepsake only now.

Last year I made a single channel 1/2 model as I figured that after 38 years of modeling it was high time to conqueor single channel flying. It was a success but the funny part is that I put my new radio in the model to try it out. What is it? An Airtronics RD6000 full mixing and all dancing computer TX... and all that just to run one servo.....

My first RC model was also a Jr Falcon. Lasted one flight. The funny thing is that after all these years I still remember it and the fact that the model was flying perfectly. It was the pilot not knowing how to deal with the extra speed from turns or how to get it back upwind that spelled disaster.
