Status: offline 		Now I'm thinking about getting a Funtana soon. To tell you the truth I've hardly ever even looked at or payed attention to pattern.

I was looking around and found the OS 140 and 160. What is so special about the 140?

I know the YS are supposed to be great..but are kind of expensive...I wouldn't be getting the DZ. How is the L?

Also I found the Webra 145. I like the price. How are they?

Also I really like those asano CF pipe. Are they worth the money?

MHO

YS 1.40 L Mid 8000's take off 15.5*12W on 20/20 fuel. Great power great response and love the sound. Check the valves and keep it very clean, never run it lean and it will still need to be rebuilt ($$) every 300 flights or so.

YS 1.40 DZ Similiar numbers with a 16.5 *12w on 30%. Don't own one but a few friends do. Very finicky on settings but when the run seem to be very powerful and smoother than the L. No idea on longevity.

OS 1.60 FX Simple, powerful and easy to handle. Side exhaust, stock muffler is heavy 11 oz as well as the rest of the engine 32.6 oz. and tank placement matters.

OS 1.40 RX Around 8000 on a 17*12N on 15%. Pretty simple and lighter. Pumped and rear exhaust. Bearing life can be short 100 flights or so but easy fix. Will be in my new plane.

Webra 1.45X Lightest of the bunch numbers seem online with the OS RX. Only seen one and seem to run pretty well.

The Asano pipes look expensive to me. I was tempted to spend the money on the ES composites pipes but wound up with the heavy OS pipe. Piedmont models is setting up to bring in Manfred Greve's pipe which are Al but very light and supposed to be around $100.

I've gotten rid of all my 4-stroke stuff. I just prefer the simplicity of the 2-strokes.
I've run the Bully 1.20 and 1.45 (very similar to the Webra) with great success! Everything I've heard about the Webra (from Piedmont) has been good. The new version (Aero-X) should be even better - I may have to get one of those myself. I have an OS 1.40 with about 50 flights on it. I love this motor - runs great. I'm running an 'F' plug, 10% nitro and an APC 16.5 x 12W prop. The engine seems very happy. I can't speak to the bearing life issue with OS- 100 flights is pretty pathetic. The bearings in my Bullys are still good and one of them has 1,000+ flights. I've also run the ST2300 with a wrap around header, 'F' plug and header tank (no pump) - it ran very well with good power. Much better performance with an OS 7D carb or Perry Mega-carb.
Lastly, the OS 1.60FX. You can get Hatori wrap around headers for this engine from Central Hobbies. I"ve not run mine in a pattern ship yet, but with a pressure line and a header tank or the Cline fuel regulator I think it would be a great choice. There are several being run in the Focus pattern ship (among others). Power will not be a problem if you go with the 1.60.
The good news is that all the available engines work well. There are significant price variations, I'm not convinced that spending a grand for an OS 1.40EFI will give you better performance than with a properly set-up OS 1.60FX (about $600 cheaper, too).
The YS 'Dingo' has been getting rave reviews; so I'm sure if you go that route you'll be very happy.

Status: offline 		I own 140L's and a couple of 140DZ's, and have seen all the other motors in the air on pattern ships.

My opinion is that the 140DZ is the best motor that you can use for pattern. It gives you all the power of the big 2-strokes, with all the beauty of throttle response, breaking, and consistent power (no pipe effects) of a 4-stroke. As for setting it, I would not call it finicky, you just need to make sure that you are not running it rich or it will give you headaches trying to set it, takes a little getting used to but then its all good.

So far I have about 8 gallons of fuel through the DZ, I have not once touched the valves. While running on the ground the engines remains cool enough to touch and has almost no vibration. I would imagine that its life will be longer than the L, but only time will tell.

If you plan on keeping the plane light ~10lbs or less, then I think the L (you said you wont get a DZ) would be the best choice, but if your plane is heavy and you are going to need a bunch more power then you will have no choice but to go with one of the 2-strokes.

Status: offline 		I've just run the 140L, and got rid of ALL the problems I earlier had. Its brand new, and already idles like a jewel at just a shade over 2000RPM, (brand new, remember!), has tons of torque, in a nice linear way, and wow, does it roar at full! The choice is yours really, for the Funtana, which is a fun toy, you don't use as much power as in pattern, where you have LONG verticals with rolls and that type of thing. I have seen that Chip Hydes DZ is spinning the OS 140RX at the same RPM.
My vote=YS, any of them, but preferably the DZ!!!!

My DZ spins a 16x12 @ 8900 on 25% at 3500' asl, occasionally I see 9100 on the tach

That is too high an rpm though, prop it for mid 8's.

I have run mezilcs(sp?) and there is not a better prop out there then the APC it is the most effecent prop out there. I had a 16x12 mezilc and i got 88 hundred but when i put on the apc 16x12 i only got 84 but much more pull. I would maybe go wit the 18x6w I think that would be great

Hi Will,

What kind of rpm are you seeing with that prop and what plane are you flying? How does it fly with the wide blade?
