Looking for sollutions to a persistant problem with the fuel foaming up. Wondering if any others with the Great Planes RV4-40 kit have the same problem. The tank will foam up so bad the engine has a difficult time running over 1/2 throttle.

Aircraft consists of the following: (all purchaced NEW this last winter)

RV4-40
O.S. 46 FX
O.S. #8 glow plug
Bisson Pitts Muffler
Easy Fueler Fuel Filler Valve
2 1/4" Tru Turn Spinner
11x5 APC Prop (yes, it has been balanced)
10oz. Fuel Tank (yes, it is padded, but not too tight)
20% Wild Cat
Fiber glass cowl from "Stan's"

I have the same engine combo on an Easy Sport 40 ARF (the only exception is the muffler which is tunned on the Easy Sport) purchased at the same time with NO foaming problems.

As the second post suggested - there does seem to be alot of external vibration from the rear tips of the fiber glass cowl and the surrounding fuse - I am wondering if any other RV4-40 kit owners have noticed the same.

I have heard rumors of a possible coctail containing "Armorall protectant" Any truth to this and how much per gal.

I reallly wan't to get this fixed. It is a terrific plane as my first low wing tail dragger.

In all cases the foaming is created by some kind of external vibration. This could be caused by an imbalanced prop, loose motor mount, or simply an harmonic in the aircraft fuselage. The best bet is to examine the prop to see if it is balanced properly, there are prop balancers available from most hobby shops and I am sure if you ask one of the guys at the field they would help you balance it if you are not familiar with this process. As for the armour all trick, yes it does help, only add a couple of drops to a gallon. Please check the other things before doing this as you may only be masking a most serious problem.

Jerry is absolutly right, foaming is due to the above mentioned items.
If after the above issues are investigated and problems still occur, start looking at possible air leaks in the fuel system, in particular the needle valve and fuel lines coming to and from.
You may also want to pad the tank (if you can get to it), if none of the above helps.

Solution to this headache...

Steps taken:

Re-packed the fuel tank with 1/2" foam = no solution
Installed a Du-bro rubber isolated aluminum mount = no solution
Balanced prop = no solution
Installed new tru- turn spinner = no solution
Reinforced firewall = no solution

REMOVED THE PITTS MUFFLER and installed the stock one = FIXED

The engine sings like an OS 46 FX should.
Engine RPM increased dramatically
Able to lean the motor a FULL turn plus a couple clicks
Speed in flight increased :-)
Now its a JOY to fly...

Thanks for the earlier posts in attempt to fix the problem...

Prowler,

I am building an Rv-4 currently and I saw your post
about the muffler. My airplane is to be setup almost
identical to yours with the exception I am going to put
in an OS 50SX. Still using a True turn spinner and
Bisson Pitts Muffler. I was curious if you have since
tried that muffler again?

I've read that one of the two exhaust ports on a Pitts muffler must be plugged in order to generate sufficient tank pressure.
Search, and you'll probably find info.

The final sollution at the end of last Summer was to switch to the Slimline Pitts muffler. The engine runs great with it, response was better, and still no foaming. Just as a test, I reinstalled the Bisson Pitts muffler and the foaming problem did return, so I threw it away.
