Any engine sounds sweet to me, as long as it's running correctly But my favorites are single row radials from 3 to 9 cylinders.

As an oldtimer I agree with many others that the sound of one or preferably many RR Merlin engines (such as on a Lancaster bomber) is hard to beat.

Because this site is about modelling, take a look at these pictures of an 1/5 scale RR Merlin and also watch (and listen) to the video.

While at it, have a look at the perfect airframe to house this engine.

Awesome!

I'm as fond as anyone of the big Merlins and radials, but I have to admit I kind of like the sound of my Rotax 503 on climbout. The exhaust itself is a nice note but the cooling fan makes a very loud turbine-like shriek, especially on a plane where the motor is right behind you.

Outside the plane, they kind of remind me of R/C planes, and inside it's just a neato scream.

I guess I like it because it's so cheap for 50hp that'll crank a prop without failure, even at the ridiculous price of 4 grand

The 503 is truly the best "gasser" you can buy, IMO

The sweet sound of ANY single engined aircraft engine over water, a long way from land, at night.
