Hi Guys,

I am really an ignorant on this subject so excuse my dumb questions...
First Isn't the fuel you call diesel the same as we use on a car or truck? If not, why is it called diesel?
Second I have heard this is cheaper than regular glow fuel, what is the composition of this diesel r/c fuel?

I am thinking on going diesel because we can get 40 to 45 degrees Centigrade here in Monterrey and engines tend to get really hot, I heard these engines run a little cooler is this so?
Besides there are none here in our field and would like to give something different and cheaper a try.

Thanks for any additional insights on the subject.

Best regards,

Homero Cuellar

Model diesel fuel is a mixture of ether kerosene and lube oil usally the
lube is castor oil or a castor/syn blend . The ether is to ignite the mixture
under compression, Truck diesel # 2 fuel oil will not work since model
diesels do not use a direct injection system and in trucks the very high
compression heats up the the air and at that point the fuel is injected
as a mist and fires off. The one nice thing about diesel is the fuel
consumption is about 50% of glow the price becomes a trade off
the other thing is increased power 40 diesels easily turn props normally
uses on 60 glows also you can "time the engine" (adjust compression for
different prop loads) with glow you are fiddling with nitro % and head shims diffent glow plugs) whoops forgot no glow plugs
Go to the davis diesel site and cluttons site for a wealth of info on this
You want to pipe the exhaust away from the plane to keep it cleaner
piping it not a problem since no back pressure problems with diesels
Also if running it will stay running even if not adjusted right may not
run well but will keep on ticking so dead sticks go a way (except when
tank is empty)

Rudolf Diesel wrote he was thinking engine can run without sparkplug or hotbulb (glowplug in out modern glowplugengines, not in his period), therefore he invented to use compression to raise temperature before fuel igniting. Auto/truck dieselengines and model dieselengines works same either it has injection or carburator.

Dieselfuel with ignition improver (to example amylnitrate, MEK peroxide) increasing centigrade and reducing ignition lag for our model dieselengines and we can reduce compression (less temperature) with same effect and run cooler.

Rudolph tried to use coal dust for fuel and one engine exploded and nearly killed him.

Yes, accurate, he tried difference fuels and difference methods to send the fuel in cylinder before injection was used. After engine ran fine, then he tried difference oil from vegetable, animal and difference oil without problem..

He used the idea from a compression lighter , a pump with light inflammable fuel to ignite fuel where lighthousekeeper ignited the lamp inside in the light.

Homero Cuellar , what is the composition of this diesel r/c fuel?

Mixing without percentage:

#1
Same parts ether/kerosene/oil.

#2
A better mix is ether 3 parts, kerosene 3 parts, oil 2 parts by volume.

#3
One part castor oil
One part ether (this is 25% ether; go to 35%, or more, for bores smaller than 1/2 in.)
Two parts of No. 2 diesel fuel (truck fuel)
(optional) 1 1/2 % hexyl nitrate to improve ignition

#4
More precise mix in percentage:

Ether Kerosene Castor oil Isopropyl Nitrate or MEKP
35% 35.00% 28% 2.00%
30% 43.75% 24% 2.25%
30% 47.50% 20% 2.50%

#5
For PAW engines (can use in other modeldieselengines).

Med. Castor Oil Paraffin Ether Iso Propyl Nitrate or MEKP

Running in 30% 35% 33% 2%
Fully run in 25% 40% 33% 2%
Fully run in
- BR Models 20% 48% 30% 2%
Fully run in
- TBR only
(Racing and Speed) 15% 50% 32-33% 2-3%

#6
For MVVS 2.5 ccm diesel
45% ether, 30% kerosene, 25% castor oil

It is all i has wrote what you can mix your own fuel.

Thanks to all you guys, it's been very helpful all your info. Before hopping into diesels I have to first make sure I can get all the necessary ingredients to make my fuel.

Jens, is there any commercial name for the isopropyl nitrate? where can you get it. Here in Mexico I can get the oil, the ether, and kerosene, but I wouldn't know where to get the isopropyl nitrate or MEKP.
Maybe one of you guys in the US can better help me. I often go to the US, so I might be able to get it there...

Thanks for all the info guys.

Kind regards,
Homero Cuellar

It is difficult to buy isopropyl nitrate .

There is difference liquids to add dieselfuel as ignition improver:

Isopropyl nitrate, amylnitrate (hearth medicine), ethyl nitrite, amyl nitrite, 3-chloro-ethyl nitrate, paraldehyde.

various organic peroxides like Tertiary Butyl Hydro-peroxide, Di-Tertiary Butyl peroxide etc...

MEKP are polyester hardener. MEKP means methyl ethyle ketone peroxide. It is easy to buy MEKP where they sell articles for glassfibre for boat, car etc..

What size engine and what kind of performance do you need?
