I have a TRX 2.5 engine and I can't seem to get the needles set at all. It runs extremely hot....yet rich. I know it's not an airleak because I just replaced the fuel tank and fuel lines. The engine is just freshly broken in so it's not due to being worn out or anything like that. I go back to the "break in" settings and it runs really rich yet it still runs around 250 degrees. When I lean it out to where I think it runs good it runs around 330 degrees before finally flaming out. WHAT DO I DO ?? THe temperature and humidity are normal....around 75 degrees and not much humidity at all.I'm around 2000 feet elevation also. Anyone have any ideas?

What kind of fuel are you using, do you have the stock cooling head? Do you have decent airflow over the cooling head, I cut out the front and rear windshield to improve airflow.

What is your definition of running good? I run my car pretty rich because I'm not racing it so I don't need to run it hot. Basically I richened it up so that it barely got into second gear then leaned it up a bit so that it ran at 275.

Hope that helps.

Mark

I'm running Trinity 20% monster horsepower fuel. I have the stock cooling head and I know I have decent airflow over the head because I'm running it with the body off to try and keep it cool enough. My definition of running good would be around the 270 degree mark with a little bit of smoke always coming out when wide open so I know it's getting good lubrication. I'm not racing it or anything and I'd like it to last but the way things are going it won't last at all running 330 degrees.

well I've looked all over for the standard low speed needle setting and it keeps saying "flush with the end of the carburetor or whatever. It's impossible to know when it's exactly flush. I'm needing to know how many in then how many out. That would be a lot easier to figure out, and also...what abotu the idle needle. What is the stock on it? other than "flush"

u dont want to screw the lsn all the way in, the end of the needle gets stuck and stays in even when u unscerw it.
get the carb an screw level as poss if u rtealy whant factory settings it doesn't realy matter close is enuf i think yr only gona move it when it doesn't have the desired affect.but ne way get it flush as possible then use the same screw driver an slide it flat from the carb to the screw if it catches on the screw it to proud if it catches on the other side of the carb then its not proud enough?
let us kno how u get on?

well I've got the needles pretty well at the "factory" settings. Where are some common spots for air to be leaking on the 2.5 engine. I replaced the fuel tank and fuel lines so I know that that is not it.

make sure the head is down tight ?yeah an maybe the bearing behind the flywheel that could be the culprit it might be best to take it to your lhs and get the bloke to have a look ther hav bin a few ive heard bout wiv leaky bearings so that might be it if it is just send it bak to traxxas but make sure it isnt the carb seating or the backplat first.

Well I wouldnt think it would be the bearings. I mean maybe it could happen if the engine wasnt almost brand new. I just don't see how a brand new engine from them would be leaking air. There are no signs of oil or anything around any of the bearings and there isnt any around the backplate either so I don't think that's the place where it's leaking. I'm thinking it's somewhere in the carburetor. I have noticed that when my carb goes into wide open throttle then u let off it has a little "catch" to it on the way back to idle. Like something is binding inside the carburetor. Where would I look for leaks on the carb? Like I said though......it's only got around 8 tanks of fuel through it and I've never taken any of the engine apart on it before. I have checked all of the bolts on the head and backplate for tightness however.

on yr carb u have that red o ring make sure the carb is squeezed down nice an tight to that.have u been to traxxas.com look on the how to list ..trx tear down it has some stuff wiv the carb on it. as for the binding of the slider on the return u might hav to sit ther for a lil while loosen of the locknut on the side of the carb then keep moving yr throttle from wot to idle while twisting the carb for the most resistance free motion.i had to do i as well but every tear down youl have to do it

does this help u?
by the way it might be a duff bearing im not saying u wrecked it sum1 sometimes gets a duff engine u cant really help it, neither can traxxas thats y they have customer support and it is good support.

I read the thread and by the way they talked in it they were talking about getting a different cooling head. I'm not sure that, that will solve the problem. I think it will only mask the problem. I'd think that the engine would still be running as hot but the head would show differently. There's got to be an airleak elsewhere. I heard a test you could do to check to see if your carb is leaking. You can get your tmaxx started and running then pull the filter off (while it's not going anywhere AND still running) then squirt some WD-40 in it. If the idle cleans up and it start running better for an instant then it's a leak in the carburetor. I guess the WD-40 acts as a temporary sealer during this time. I'm still up in the air as to what to do to fix my problem because this test did not work and nothing else seems to be either......anyone have some suggestions?
