I am running a YS 63( probably less than 10 hrs flight time) in my UCANDO. The engine seems to run fine on the ground, bu I notice surging during the flight and the engine dies on approach. I suspect a heat-related problem. Previosuly, I have engine on a TopCap and zero problems with it.

I am running it with the cowl, but do have plenty of ventilation-in and out. The rest of the of the info is: I am using Willdcat YS 20/20 with a 13x6 APC prop. I tune it for around 10-10.5k on the ground. Any suggestions?

Reduce the prop load until the engine is running between 11000 and 11500.

Dave
I flew my YS 63 today with the APC 13x4W and it flew well. However, I was not able to get 11-11.5k you recommended. It would seem to run too lean so I backed it back to 10.5k. No sign of the surging or overheating. I did have a problem with the engine dying on approach or upon touchdown. I tried richening the low end needle for my final flight and it helped.

Maybe you need to try a standard 13x4. 10500 isn't bad, I just like to run them faster. They run cooler and have better throttle response. Is the plug new, or close to it?
What is the idle speed?

Well, my saga continues. I stayed with the 13x4W becuase I tached it at 13,950 so I thought that was pretty close to your target. The engine conties to idle well and run great until approach or landing when it generally dies. It do not typically here it sputter before it dies. Could my issue still be heat related? Could it be the regulator is getting hot and changes the idle mix at the end of my flight? I never had this problem on my Top Cap.

Try richening up the regulator a bit, and maybe raise the idle speed a couple of hundred.
