I have a Hobbico digital ESV meter that will obviously give me a reading on a 6 volt pack, but I'm told the "load" is set for a typical draw on 4.8 volt pack. Someone suggested I need a 1 amp load that can be soldered into the lead before it goes into the ESV. What do I need to solder into the line to do this? A resistor? (You can tell I'm not an electronics wiz) Also, the ESV has the ability to turn off the load to the 4.8 volt so that is something I don't need to deal with.

Any help would be appreciated..........Thanks........Mark

The ESV has an internal load that is close enough for use with a "typical" 6V pack. At 6V, the current draw will increase by 25%, which is not a serious issue. If you really care, then put a 4 or 5 ohm resistor in series with one lead. I would not worry about it though.

Generally the ideal test load should be C/5, but many ESV's use a fixed 300mA value (4.8V rating). However, in a perfect world the load would change to accomodate the rated mAH capacity.

Are you sure your ESV scale will accept the 6.0V range? Isn't it color coded, scalewise, for a 4.8V pack?

This one is digital and will go up to a reading of 19.99 volts DC (according to the operating manual), so the read out will be fine for the 6V packs. However you are correct Tom in the fact that their is a Red/Green LED that is used to represent a Go/No Go situation at 4.8 volts or 9.6 volts. I do want to put a decent load on the packs as they are going into a giant scale plane. The batteries are 1650 Mah NiMh.

Your particular meter uses a fixed 250mA load at 4.8V. It will be about 310mA at 6.0V. On a 1650mAH pack, that works out to be a C/5 load, which is a popular value.

In case you want to load it some more, you might consider using flashlight bulbs. A #47 is about 150mA. A #46 is 250mA. Radio Shack carries these. They would go in parallel with the meter and would add to its fixed current draw.

Otherwise, ues ohms law and choose the resistor value that gives you what you need.
