I have been running my US 41 for about a year now with absolutely no problems. It has been a very good running, reliable engine and has been more than adequate for my 19 lb. American Eagle Spitfire.
At a recent warbird fly-in my engine began to spit and sputter and suddenly stopped. With the warnings I received, I was able to set up for landing and was already on base when the engine stopped. Upon examination, I discovered that the coil had come off of the engine. The bolts were still tight in the two coil mounts that protrude from the front of the jug, but both coil mounting prongs on the front of the jug had broken off, causing the coil to bounce around in the cowl and strike up against the bottom of the magneto before the prop came to a halt. I've always flown with balanced props and there has never been any excessive vibration. The plane has never been crashed or struck on the nose. Is this normal metal fatigue? Has anyone else experienced this occurrence? I've had this happen on a Quadra 52, but the engine was relatively old and had been through a few mishaps. This engine has never been crashed and has always been well maintained and oiled. Until this occurred, it was a flawless little engine. Anybody got any ideas? What's the fix? There is now no place for the coil to mount on the jug, and the mag is scared up, but not too badly.
Help. is this under any kind of warranty? I can understand wearing the engine out and needing new rings, bearings, carb kit, etc, but to have the front of the jug break off wasn't something that I anticipated as normal wear and tear.
I have another US 41 that I will install on the airplane, but I have hopes that I won't have to use the one that broke as a fishing sinker. If I can send in the broken jug to Great Planes, I would appreciate if Mrs. Cross would let me know.
Thanks in advance for any replies or answers you guys can give me.

fighter,
for your 'other users input' you'll want to repost in the regular engine forum.

Regarding servicing it, definitely send her in. Without seeing it i can't provide you any input whatsoever on whether or not it will be warranty covered, and that is certainly a brand new method of failure that at least i've not heard of before, but it may be a warranty issue.

Please ship your product to:

Hobby Services
1610 Interstate Drive
Champaign IL 61822

with a brief letter describing the problem you have had and include your proof of purchase and a copy of your receipt from purchase. Our staff will inspect your product and will notify you regarding their findings. If it is found to be defect, the product will be repaired or replaced at our option at no cost to you. If it is not a failure covered under warranty, you will be notified of your options for return, repair or replacement. Thank you for your patience and, of course, your business.

fighter,

What you described is my exact same experience. Low time. No previous damage, no prop strikes, or impact on the engine. Though mine was low time, it was an old purchase (not from Tower), so I had no hope of warranty (I plan quick and build slow).

One of the two screw ears showed signs of having broken earlier and the natural vibration took care of the rest.

Do as AnnMarie suggests, send it in. If you are covered under warranty, problem solved. If not, it depends on the repair cost. I figured the only repair was replacement of the engine case. This cost upwards of $150 when you consider all the parts involved and requires complete disassembly of the engine. The MUCH BETTER choice is to contact CH and convert it to electronic ignition. This costs a bit more, but greatly reduces the weight (8-10 ozs.), improves starting, reliability, and idle. I have been very happy with mine since convertion.

Good luck,

Bedford

This is one of those situations where it really shouldn't matter how old the engine is, it's not worn out, it just broke where it shouldn't have and for no apparent reason. It is not an operational part, subject to normal wear and tear that comes with age. It is an immovable part of the jug that just broke off.
This engine was shipped to me by Great Planes as a replacement to one that I had sent in to Hobby Services a little more than a year ago. I do not believe that I have any of the paper work but if Hobby Services has a record of my name and address, they should be able to tell when the engine was shipped to me. As soon as I remove it from my airplane, I will send it in to Hobby Services per your instructions. I hate to lose this little engine, because from the day that I put it on the aircraft, until this event, it has run flawlessly and performed well up to expectations.
Thank you Mrs. Cross for your reply, it is greatly appreciated. I will let you know of the outcome.
Thanks again,
Bill Krummel
