Even though I have seen Paul's gear up close in-person(ala Smokin Joe's Bird), the detail never cease to put me in awe. As we say in the hood, "it's SICK, Yo!".

Does the plaining and shrink links work? I can't tell if the knuckle rotates. I

    Hi Rippah,

You might be able to help me with something. I have been trying to understand how the F-18 gear work for a long time, as you said it is very tough to visualize, but I have these beautiful scale models from Paul to use for help!

So Rippah, I think I understand the geometry of how the gear leg goes up and down in the wheel well, but I do not understand how this !QUOT!knuckle!QUOT! you are referring to works.

If you look at the picture, is this the !QUOT!knuckle!QUOT! I have marked? And if I understand correctly, the linkages somehow pull the top part of the knuckle around, in the arcing motion I have noted? Is this correct?

Now if this is correct, my guess is that the axle for the wheel runs in a different axis than the knuckle moves in, like I have shown in the drawing. So that when the knuckle is rotated (in that same arc) the wheel moves in a different arc, for some reason...is this correct?

And if THIS is correct (little chance at this point, I know!) then what causes the linkages to rotate the knuckle...is it upon retraction, or upon compression (squat) of the strut, or both.

the reason i ask is that all of the model scale gear (I know of) in the market do not have this rotating knuckle, and I am trying to figure out why. The model scale has a MUCH narrower track than the full scale, and perhaps this knuckle is the key.

Thanks for listening to the rambling!

Mr Matt, I'll try and shed some light this the best way a Radio Technician can, I other words I don't specialise in Landing gear. But I can only tell it as I've seen it done when the A/c is jacked and retractions carried out.

The two control rods that I refered to as the plaining and shrink links connect to the latch that locks the axle in place when the a/c MLG (main Landing gear)is down and when WOW (weight on wheels) the wheels track straight and everything is square. The magic happens with the the a/c goes WoffW and the MLG start to retract. The plaining and shrink link unlock the axle !QUOT!knuckle!QUOT! and the wheel assy rotates aft and out at what looks like 45 degrees to its WOW position and as the MLG retracts aft at 45 and locked away. Thats the best way I can roughly explain how the wheel moves through its 90 degrees. But when you look up in the wheel well its still doesn't look as if it should fit up in there.

I hope this answers your questions, but if the is an Aircraft Technician (black hander) out there feel free to jump in and make this mud a lot clearer.

    Rippah

The exact scale ones I believe you can get from Boeing .

You might try Paul Reese (He's SDCrashmaster) on RCU for some nice scale ones.

There is some footage from that very flight ("Smokin'" Joe McBride with his Red and White #6, and Dave Presta piloting Lou "You talkin' to me?" Vadino's Chippy Ho) in the CA Jets '06 Movie.
Find it at www.ca-jets.com in the "Debrief" section. It's a large movie, but worth the download wait.

There is also some footage of both these spectacular AC in several of the movies in the Theater at www.bestinthewestjets.com
Look in both the Best In The West Theater and in the RC Jet Movies Theater. Check out Buck Garza's YA Twin in the "Buck-0-Five" movie in the RC Jet Movies Theater also.
All-in-all, I think there are 4 or 5 movies on those two sites mentioned above that have segments devoted to The Red and White #6.
Also Kenny Falconers F-18 maiden & Final Flight vids are there also.
Dizzam, I've shot a lot of footage of Yeller Twinz :-)

I know that Joe also has a couple of short movies devoted specifically to #6 also. He may chime in here.

Joe's #6 is, undoubtably, the most recognized RC Jet on the West Coast for sure. I know I could shoot video of that sucker all day long.
And again, it will probably be our ticket to once again "get up close and personal" to it's big Blue and Yellow brothers at Miramar in Oct.
BA Crew Chiefs love these shrunken down subjects. But then again...don't we all?
    Enjoy,
    Paul
