Does anyone know what became of Davey Systems and their kits? I saw an ad in a '90 RCM where this company had kitted a 56" wingspan Stampe biplane. Does anyone know anything about this kit? How it built? Or flew? The only other kits that I know of, are 80" w.s. UK kits. I'd like to know if there are any kits available out there, by a different model company. Thanks for any info pertaining to this subject, Kurt.

HI

So, you like the Stampe...great. This plane was produced in kit 1/4 scale by Precedent, from england, and Svenson had also a Stampe SV4 but with the canpopy, as used by the Belgian Air Force. I always dreamed of building one, but 1/4 scale is a little to large for me to transport. There is however 2 possibilities I am aware of, one is a plan from D&B, and the other one is much more scale, designed by Dennis Bryant.
Check Bob Holman plan service www.bhplans.com/db2.htm
there is laser cut parts for it, just do not know why plan is 1/5.3 and parts 1/6 scale.
This is one of my future projects

I did build the Davey kit. It was a long way from scale and the quality of the wood was only fair. I replaced the cowl with one from Fiberglass Masters and powered it with a Enya .60. If I had it to do again, I wouldn't. I lost it on it's maiden voyage due to a poor engine run on a hot day, but that has nothing to do with the design except the tightly cowled and inverted engine.
D&L designs has a 60" version. Their website is www.dldesigns.net. It looks to be a sport scale version, but is probably as scale as the Davey kit was.
I have posted a couple of pics of the one I built. These are not the best pics I took, but are the only ones I can find at the moment. Dean

Unfortunately Davy Systems is out of business. They had some interesting and different kits.

Hi everyone,

i'm starting to build (rebuild as a mather of fact, the former owner past away so ....) the Stampe SV4 (Svenson kit)
Some questions:
is my old 160 OS ok for this plane?
what servo's to use on ailleron, elevator and rudder?
the kit has been put aside for three years now, do you think i should treat the balsa in some way?

thanks

Eddy

I have the Precedent Stampe, 1/4 scale and very similar to the Svenson version. BTW, the Svenson version is considered to be a much superior build.

My Stampe is 12 years old, now, and flies beautifully. For most of its 12 years, it has had a Zenoah 23 fitted. Good motor, but really lacking in power for the model at its AUW of 7kg, dry. I've put up with a distinct lack of vertical performance because of the hassle factor involved in altering the setup. That said, this power unit does allow good scale-like manoeuvres...but you need a good dive prior to entering a loop or roll. I tried a Ryobi for a while..pretty useless. So now I'm considering a glow engine, a large 4-stroke.

I suspect that the OS will be much more powerful than the Zenoah, so it should very adequately fly your aeroplane.

You may like to know that the Precedent kit is (or, at least, was) dreadful. Absolutely nothing fitted. At one point in the build, I became so frustrated that I tried to sell the incomplete airframe...no-one would pay a reasonable price, so I persevered with the construction. The happy result has been the best flying machine that I have owned.

Watch the weight...I understand that Svenson make use of much spruce in the construction. You may find that this can sometimes be substituted for balsa.

Standard servos will be fine...just decent quality Futaba, JR or similar. I use two aileron servos and I would guess that is called for on the Svenson version.

Best of luck with it.

There was another Stampe SV4 kit, kitted in the mid 1980s. It was .60 sized. Although I did not build this kit, a good friend did and as I remember it was his favorite airplane for a summer. The manufacturer escapes me at present. I remember this well, as the kit came out around the time the Tom Sellick movie "High Road to China" came out. The SV4 was featured in this movie and it was a pretty good aviation movie. My friend and I attended this movie together and this is where our interest in Stampes came from.

The kit was made by one of the main-stream manufacturers back then and was distributed by Tower Hobbies, so must have been fairly popular.
