I'm no expert pilot for sure, but I do know the father and son in question and they are some of the nicest people I know in r/c. My son is 9 years old and a pretty good pilot for his age. A few weeks ago it was this kid who handed the tx of his 33%er to my son. Within 15 minutes my son was doing harriers and knife edge and also landing and taking off. The kid is a real inspiration to my son and I'll never forget the smile on my sons face that afternoon.
Sure, he does fly low and slow and way too close to the pits sometimes. More flight line discipline is needed for sure, but he'll be toeing the line soon and probably kicking butts at future contest.
Now, for those who think they should be paying for crashing their airplanes. When you hand the tx to someone, YOU assume responsibility, period! If you don't want your plane crashed, don't hand your tx to someone you don't know. This isn't even an issue.

Regarding the crashing kid....
There is so much grey area in this discussion that for anyone to say there is an absolute answer to this question is humorous. We have a kid at our field who bugs people to fly their planes. Every once in a while he finds someone dumb enough to let him. One guy in particular after a crash told me the kid owed him a plane but never ponied up the cash. I asked him why the kid owed and he said that right after the crash the kid said,"I owe you a plane". He then went on to say that made two planes the kid owed him, I was flabergasted.

For anyone to let a stranger at an out of town event fly their plane must assume all risk associated. From the wide range of responses here it's obvious that you can't count on someone having the same sense of responsibilty that you have.

I have known these people since the youngster was ten years old. He has flown other people’s planes on numerous occasions at our field. In EVERY case, he was ASKED to fly the plane, I do not know of ONE time when he ever asked someone to fly their plane. I asked him to fly my Ultimate last month. The only bad thing that happened was it was graphically demonstrated to me that I will never have his expertise. I have seen him crash plenty of planes. Never saw him crash one that he didn’t own.

His dad is very proud of him, and brags on him - a lot. His dad also hauled a Cat 140 miles over a mountain pass, extended our runway and moved a bunch of dirt. All at his own expense.

These are high quality people. They have gone out of their way to help us. I am yet to hear of them refusing to help anyone.
Some of the messages in this group paint this kid as a spoiled brat. From someone who knows him, this is not the case.
