ORIGINAL: helidreamer-RCU Hroachen can you PLEASE tell me WHERE exactly. And I have another question? Isn't it illegal to fly a nitro heli without going to a club or special field Okay, then nearest spot to you would be in Flushing Meadow Park where the U-Control guys fly their planes... It's not really a heli place, but most of the guys there are pretty cool about it and won't give a heli flier a hard time if you ask nicely. Most of them shop at the store where I work (Fantasia Hobby World) I fly at Cunningham Park (by the corner of Francis Lewis and 73'rd Ave. on many weekday mornings. It's usually just me and my buddy Wes there, in the morning no one else is using the ballfields. In the evenings the ballplayers are all out there so I won't even show up with my stuff. The last thing I want is to be an annoyance to anyone who might complain. Flying at the ballfields is not strictly legal, but the few times the police have stopped while I was flying it was to ask questions about the heli and not to tell me to leave. IT's against the Parks Dept. rules to fly there, so I can't say it's something I recommend, but I live right there so I'll fly there until someone has a problem with it. In Brooklyn it gets better... The PARCS at Floyd Bennett allow helis, but their rules are too restrictive (stand in this spot and only hover, or stand in this spot and only fly around in a circle, nothing else) Then there's the Seaview club flying at Cropsey Ave, but you have to park far from the flight area and carry your stuff a long way on foot unless you're in the club and get the parking permit and key to the gate. Best place in Brooklyn I think is the Marine Park club at Gerritsen Ave... Very friendly bunch and Saturdays are a mixed bag of airplanes and helis, and everyone gets along great. Best bet if you're in Rego Park and not driving yet is to visit the U-Control circles at Flushing Meadow... I don't think they'd give you a hard time there, but be aware that it's officially a control-line site only, so AMA might not cover you if something were to happen and the heli got away, and the Van Wyck Expressway is pretty close to the field... I'm working on forming a club, I'm just researching what's involved now, but I'll be looking to get a site in the Bayside area that I have my eye on... The area I have in mind is not under the control of the City, it's federally operated, and it's typically a lot easier to get permission from the fed than the NYC authorities. It'll be a while before this happens tho... I've got a BUNCH of research to do first.
