I am assembling a Swallow 90 and was wondering whether to use the pushrod elevator system supplied or put 2 elevators servos in the tail area. Does anyone have experience with this plane? This will be my first pattern style plane so any help is appreciated.

I don't think you could get it to balance with 2 servo's in the tail. But I thought their pushrod was a bit mickey-mouse, so I built one out of carbon tube and 4.40 tail wires. Worked fine.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid it would come out tail heavy if I moved the servos. So I will try to make one out of CF as suggested. Just don't care much for the pushrod that came with it.

I have Swallow, put a CF pushrod in it but used the supplied tail rods (but I soldered them together and to the coupler to the pushrod) that baby ain't goin nowher, works fine.
MIne has a .72 Irvine with a tuned pipe (not tuned as of this writing) and needed 2.5 oz to balance in the nose

I built one using the stock supplied elevator pushrod and with 8101 servos a 1200 nimh battery and hitec super slim rec. used a YS110, johnson header and mac quiet pipe and with some careful shifting of componets it balanced at 165 mm back from the leading edge. I am building a second one now and i am using a mk bellcrank from central hobbies and a dave brown fiberglass pushrod to the bellcrank. hopefully this will work better. due to the rudder pull pull cables and the elevator servo arm trying to occupy the same space on the first one. had to elevate the rudder servo around 1/8"

If you can get around the balance problem I would highly recommend one servo per elevator. I use the “Ailevator” function on my Futaba 8uaps, makes the elevator work as an aileron as well. It also gives you a back up elevator servo. I find it easier to fly precise loops with the Ailevator function running, it makes it harder to drop a wing during the loop.

How do you guys like the Swallow? I am thinking of getting one for competing in our local pattern contests. Does it come setup with pull-pull rudder? Any comments on quality or other issues?

d_bodary, how is the MK bellcrank setup working out?

Hi guys,
How did you get on with the side and downthrusts? The instructions recommend putting a washer behind the engine mount to get 1.5 degrees side / 1.5 degrees down. Is this adequate? The lump at the front will be a YS120 with pipe.

Hi d_bodary,

I've taken the same route ie bellcrank in the rear. Same problem - had to raise rudder servo. However I'll put the throttle servo further forward so the rudder one can sit across the way. Should keep things clear of the wing bolts. Only problem is squeezing the throttle servo into the bay above the wing 'cos I want to put the fuel tank there.

I have seen a throttle servo sitting on the bottom of the fuze a couple of inches behind the engine firewall which might be an idea. Short throttle link, with an extended servo cable back to the Rx.

the swallow flies fine. i am flying it in intermediate and it is a better plane than i am a pilot.it is setup for pull pull on the rudder. i used du bro cables instead of the provided hardware.the reason i have used du bro before and had goodluck with it. the mk bell crank set up is going to work out fine. i"ve been happy with the quality so far,around 100 flightsexcept for the wheel pants to thin use bolly wheel pants. and the covering is garbage. i am recovering the second one using ultracote and monokote. the instructions call for the center of gravity at 125 mm from the leading edge, do not set it there the correct cg is 165mm to 175mm from the leading edge. mine is balanced at 165mm and shows slight signs of being nose heavy.

I am about to finally build my Swallow, as I do not wish to breakthe bank with this plane I am thinking of getting a MVVS91 2C on it (would cost 50% of a nice 120 4C). Anyone can let me know if this is a decent combination, would a tuned pipe be much better?

Anyone with pictures of how they routed the tuned pipe and header for a 2C set up? Thanks!

Bolly makes a good c/f swept gear that I use on all my pattern designs. They make either an f3a standard or large, take the measurements and figure out which one is closest. if I had to guess I'd think the standard would work best.

As I allready saw on Bolly's page the standard (as the F3A) type of gear are much lower than the original. Maybe this will be a problem with big props?

the bolly f3a standard is about an inch too short compared to the stock gear. you should use the bollt f3a large gear. the big problem you will have is that the rake is a lot different from stock. you will need to move the gear forward from the stock location. if you have not installed the chin cowl or the rails for the screws yet. you will be in good shape. if you already have the chin cowl installed you will need to move the cutouts forward. i installed the f3a standard on my plane and with a 15x10 apc ground clearance is fairly minimal had plenty of clearance with the stock gear.in answer to the next question the reason i had to replace the stock gear was due to an untimely deadstick at a bad location considered myself lucky i still had a plane.

I really like my Swallow 90. OS 91 4stroke. Used the pull pull on the rudder. And the supplied control rod on the elvator. Flys great. The
CG is at 165mm.

One question Does anyone know where I can get a Canopy for this plane? Lost mine doing some knife edge.
