OLDROOKIE, I was referring to the available power. Using 1300 mAh Nicads VS. 7Ah gel-cell. All power sources drop in voltage when a load is applied. Neither system will be turning the starter at the voltage measured with no load.

I believe that in actual practice the severe load of a starter motor trying to crank a big engine will pull the nicad voltage down to a lower level than the gel-cell, resulting in lower wattage, and less cranking power.

An automobile battery rated at 50-75 amps, also has a cold cranking rating that usually approaches 400 amps. The battery will actually deliver that kind of current for a short period. Because of the smaller electrodes in a gel-cell, you will get only fraction of that current, and the nicads will produce even less. These figures are off the top of my head, but you should be able to see the comparison.

However, after reading the originators last post, we learned he is cranking .40 ci engines. Either system will give him more ummph than he will actually need. The gel-cell will give a lot more starts before needing a re-charge.

Higher capacity Nicads or a small gel-cell (maybe 3 mAh) might be a lot more satisfactory.

just a note here... I happily start my saito .72 with a single 8 cell (9.6v) 1600 AA nimh pack. (radio shack pack) starts great with a heavy duty tower hobbies starter, it doesn't spin it the fastest but plenty for a .40 - .72 4 stroke. You can't get much lighter then that for a starting pack! (although it won't start my gasser...)
