I am looking to add a battery pack to my Sullivan starter, and I am debating whether to buy a Sullivan battery pack or just wire 2, 6-cell battery packs in series. Both options would result in 14.4 volts and about 1500 mah. Is one way better than the other, or should I just go with the overall cheapest option?

Tex,

I use two six volt (1500 MAh) batteries - the type used for RC cars - on my Kavan starter and it works great. I bought them at Radio Shack for something like $6.00 each. They charge fast and they are "disposable". The extra couple of volts makes my starter very popular at the field.

I've had the Sullivan pack for a long while and it works great. With the Sullivan starter the extra 2 volts makes big difference. Either way, that's the important thing. Guys who have tried the Sullivan starter on 12 volts aren't happy with the results.

a 12 cell sullivan or 2.....6 cell in series are ok. the 14 volts gives the starter plenty of power. 2 .....6 volt throw aways ? i dont think so. the sullivan pack batteries are 3000mah, so you get a few more starts without recharging

A lot of people are tie-wrapping a 12v 7ah gel cell to their starters. Twice the power with minimal weight gain, plus a big savings also.

There is a SPAD version floating arount (coroplast case) but its not necessary...

twice the power of what ? minimal weight gain ? the gell cell weighs more than the starter. does not deliver the power of a 14 volt system

Sam -

Sorry about that. Not sure why it didn't work, but try this one instead:

That is why my solution sounds so attractive. Go to Tower Hobbies and look for RC car batteries. Connect them in parallel and you get 14.4 volts. I use 1500 MAh batteries but you can get up to 3000 (probably more). Attach them to the bottom of your starter with some tie-wraps and you are done. If you want to do some more work, like I did, go to Radio Shack and get a plastic case that can accommodate the batteries and attach it to the bottom of the stater with screws.

I think my final tab was about $25-30, compare that to the commercial version and there is no reason to pay a lot of money. The starter is something that does not need a high degree of reliability; if it fails there is usually someone else at the field that has a starter you can borrow.

your first post said 6 volt disposable bats. now your proposing 6 cell cell cell rechargeable bats. now i agree. as the original poster asked: go with cheaper unit. btw.connect them in series not parallel.
A lot of people are tie-wrapping a 12v 7ah gel cell to their starters. Twice the power with minimal weight gain, plus a big savings also.
Allow me to clarify myself a little. For twice the power, I was merely using simple ohms law P=I*E. (12v7ah=84watts; 14.4v3ah=43.2watts).

For the minimal weight gain, I was referring the gel cell to the othe rechargables (car batts). There are several guys using this setup(including me). There is little weight gain, and its pretty easy to handle (the gel cell is not as bulky as one would think).

Just try it....it takes 5 minutes to make and if you don't like it then take it apart.

My experience with the Sullivan starter is that it likes higher voltage more than it likes higher amperage.

the originator of this thread wants a 14 volt system to get more torque out of the starter. you have calculated the available power in the battery, not the power delivered to the starter
