Has anyone tried fitting a Zenoah gas engine, particularly the G38 into the Hanger 9 P-51 1.5 ARF? If not this engine any other gas engine? I am also hoping the 37.7 cc engine will be enough horse power for the plane. Thanks for reply.

WLJ -- (Enfield, NC) has done it, I saw it fly last weekend. Send him a PM, maybe he'll fill you in on the details.

    WLJ,
Did you mount the engine directly to the firewall? I am going to use the same engine on the new version of this plane. The dimensions may not be the same since it is slightly larger. Any tech info would be greatly appreciated.

Mounted to the firewall, but needed standoffs to get the spinner distance right. Fuse is the same, wingspan was just increased..

    Hello,
Can you tell me what Hanger 9's product ID number for the new version of the P-51 1.50 size is?
    Thanks,

    WLJ,
What size APC prop did you use? Did you convert to electronic ignition,if so where did you get it? Your prop washer and shaft is different, did it come with your engine or did you change it?
    Thanks,

I used a 18X8. I'm not looking for max. speed as much as scale speed. My G-38 is one of the older models that came with a steel prop hub and steel washer. Newer models have Aluminum. Didn't use electronic ign. I kept the spring starter. Moved the gas tank back to the CG. Balanced with no added wt. Billy Johnson (WLJ)

Thought I would add to this thread. I put a Zenoah G-38 in my H9 Mustang and bolted it right to the firewall. The engine I used has a spring starter and the associated cup mount. I had to replace the factory supplied spinner with a dave Brown brand I believe, and the engine is too far foreward now, the gap between the spinner backplate and the front of the cowl was way too large. I traced the back of the engine mount onto the firewall and cut out that portion of the firewall. I made a pattern and transferred that to a piece of 1/4 ply. I had to make this in two pieces but it conforms well to the existing firewall and will be glued behind the present firewall. This moved the engine back just right. I may glue a bit more ply to this, not sure how thick the firewall should be for a G-38. I will decide after some research. I saw a post somewhere about the recommended thicknesses of firewall ply for various Zenoah sizes.

    Denny,

My Zenoah manual lists firewall thickness for G-38 through GT 80twin as 10 mm of aircraft grade plywood minimum.

    Thanks Brian,
I was thinking around 3/8 inch, I will use two 1/4 inch sheets of ply bonded together, that comes to 12 MM, or just over 1/2 inch by 2 MM.
