Evil Merlin, Mrbigg

I have well over 100 flights on my Balsa USA D VII with a Evo 35. I have had no issues with the power on it. The only problem I have had is when I loop or roll with power on
the wing bands that come with the kit are way to weak. I have had 4 break on me at different times due to the stress. If over powered they might all break at once due to over power. I have been lucky in this respect that it is easy to tell when one breaks. Trim goes out the window and starts to climb like crazey.

I like to fly like they were meant to. The other day at War Birds over the Rockies. Late in the day, I was flying with a Dr 1 andf we both went into a loop at the same time. We both stalled out at the the top and I recovered about 10 ft from the ground. The extra stress broke one of the heavy duty replacement straps. If over powered might have been worse.
I was told that there has been several in flight failures due to the straps on the orginal kits. Might be an issue if over powered.

Les, I'm in complete agreement with you. The G38 is the largest engine I would go with in the D.VII. As I said, even it is a little overpowered but does allow for some performance when needed. Scale flight for a 1/4 D.VII should be no more than 25ish.

That I agree with, I have a friend who flies with the G-26 but no power to spare. I fly at 5500 ft and on a hot day a 35 is hard pressed to get off in a few hundered feet at this height.

i can't wait to get mine in the air. My flying buddies is one of the best things I've seen in the air.

During some stall drives this weekend he had a dead stick, it came across the landing area so fast you could hear it whistle thru the air. Got it down safe and sound with no damage. However the 6 of us flying that day had a slight case of extreme pucker for a bit.

Hello all,

I also fly a 1:4 D VII, not from Busa, from a german seller.Weight ca.8,5kg.
First flight I take a 180 Laser 4-stroke ( 30ccm ), but the D VII would have a little more power.
I change the engine to a Sito 220 ( 36 ccm ) 4-stroke.You must see the video on my Homepage, this is a little bit too much power.
It's not realism at full speed.
So I think a G62 - uuuuuuuh very much, like a rocket.Only one thing - you can take a big prop.

Greetings
Klaus Stephan

I have been very happy flying my BUSA DVII with the G-38. One nice thing is you can completely conceal the engine. I am even using the stock muffler and it sounds great. It was great flying with you Les at the Warbirds event.

i see you put a real tail wheel on your D.VII. How responsive is it?

What/Whose did you use?

I am using the Goldberg tailwheel assemblies on the DR1 and the DVII. If you fly off of pavement I highly recommend a wheel. I am sure I will get some arguement about scale fidelity and all but it increases the fun factor immenesly. It is also much quicker to clear the runway when you have a busy flightline.

Even on dirt I like a tail wheel on these planes. I got the pitts to skatter more than once before I started using the tail wheel. If you fly it more often you get used to it. But it is sorta big to move around. Oh it is electric powered.

Hi all;
I've enjoyed reading this thread - twice!
I have just received a Balsa-USA triplane kit, and spent several hours studying the plans. I built a Flair triplane about 25 years ago - and flew it for 15 years before the inevitable...

Has anyone any comments or advice on this kit - particularly regarding improving the scale element?
I am particularly concerned at the tail incidence - this is very non-scale. The Flair triplane had 2-3 degrees positive, like the fullsize, and I plan to modify this kit similarly.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

My Flair triplane - and the DVll - can be seen at www.stevedunne.co.uk/Models.htm
Thanks

In the past few weeks I've gotten two new Fokkers.

A Fokker D.VIII from CT Designs in Germany. Its a laser cut 1/6th scale bird. Very nice looking.
A Fokker D.VII from Oline. This one I picked up from Ebay for not too much money. It includes a pilot, William Brother's wheels and guns and some other goodies to make it more scale.

While I am a WW2 nut, the WW1 stuff, especially the Fokkers make me happy.
