Hey, Von Delby . . .

Still plodding along on my Balsa USA Tripe - just came up from the dungeon after working on the ailerons and top wing. Still hoping for a September Flight

Got one picture of it kinda assembled.

It's getting there, slow but sure

We'll see you next weekend at the GCRCC Flying Circus (understand that they've lined up some 17 WW1 Warbirds - should be wild!!!).

'til later,

Hey Lee,
Look'n real good, can't wait to see it done. What did you say you were going to cover it with??
The Flying Circus should be really great this year with all the WW1 goodies, I intend on getting lots of pics.

To everyone else that has participated in this thread, thanx for your input. You all have shown a lot of great looking planes. I have enjoyed them very much.
I know there is a lot more out there so lets try to keep the interest up. There has been lots of ground shots, lets see them in the air, two or three of them flying together.

My future plans, after I get moved that is, is to finish my GTM D8 and try it out in some scale competion. Then I have a GTM Dr.1 kit to start on that I plan to get real serious on for scale.
Later

Del Johnson

PS: A shot of me and my Flair

My dear Von Delby . . .

Plans are to cover with Coverite, then a couple coats of Sig Nitrate Dope, and then finish her using Nelson Paints. Ordered all of these (and more schtuff as well) this weekend.

The Coverite/Nitrate/Nelson path is well documented on a website: http://www.geocities.com/cubmanky/finish/finish.html

Also in talking with the chap who was one of the winners at the Scalemasters last year with the tigery painted Tiger Moth, that's how he went.

So a grand covering and painting experiment is coming in August. Stay tuned, and cover any sensitive ears in the area!!

'til later,

Hi, Lee. Your DR1 is looking great. What color scheme are you planning? What is the GCRCC Flying Circus? Is that a fly-in or a club event?

Del,
I just love the color scheme on your Flair DRI! Really sharp!

Howdy, Jim . . .

Going with the 2003 Rhinebeck Scheme - they refinished the machine in the basic red scheme after it's 2001 groundloop-noseover event. I really like how his original looked (the old rotary powered machine), and when I saw photos of the refurbished machine knew that's how I would go.

The Greater Cincinnati Radio Control Club has for some 25 years been putting on a major airshow at their home field, featuring all sorts of acts such as spin downs, combat, aerobatics and such - this year (like last) they'll be flying at the Hamilton/Fairfield Regional Airport (just a bit north of the Cincinnati area) - some of this year's acts include the Space Shuttle, an awesome "Striking Back" WWII finale, and just before the lunch break, a World War One airshow, with around nine planes in the air at any given time!!!

Last year I had been invited, and managed to put my little Great Planes DR1 up at the same time as 8 other WW1's were flying - it was the neatest thing I'd ever seen with the old birds - up 'til Dayton last year blew my socks off!!!

At GCRCC everyone in the club has an opportunity to participate in the airshow, but must qualify their plane (and themselves as well) for the event. Again I've been invited, and this year am borrowing Del's DR1 (the Udet Optical Illusion) taking on any and all comers!!!

We had a Great time at qualifying, as me and one of the GCRCC regulars with a Moraine Saulnier (French term for "target" ) had at each other. After we were done, the event director told everyone "That's exactly what I had in mind!!!

We'll see how next weekend goes - if the weather goddess's will help out a little, it should be fantastic - and I'm sure that Von Delby's gonna have lot's of photos to show for it!!!

Now for a quick supper, and back to the Dungeon!!!

'til later,

Just started to build the Balsa USA D-VII. I have built the Dr-1 and D-VIII and love them. A very large box of wood. I have had since the first week of release and just found the time to start. I will be using a G-26 for power and using the Ernst Udet color scheme. But this might change. Need to check out this site. Some of the best WWI picks of Dr-1 that I have found.
