I started sailing on a Sunfish when I was 8, and have sailed ever since (today being my 48th birthday) meshed into a 32 years of being a commercial pilot I worked at 2 different sailboat dealerships (when laid off from flying as happens in the airline industry) and built Hobies and sold Catalina's, S-2, Pearson, Erickson, O'Day, Cal, Morgan, Columbia... just to name a few. My current boat is an AMF Force 5 which is still my nautical unicycle and gives a lot more workout to me than the other way `round.

Me too. I have sailed since I was about 6. At the moment I sail a Cherub which is a high performance 12 foot dingy. I also sail sometimes on my friends J24 keel boat. I actually can't remember ever not sailing and I have been a member of a my sailing club since I was two weeks old.

Ditto..

started at about 8, with my own 'Sabot' then started stealing my dad's Laser. Sailed that when I could, untill he got an Albacore. Then we became club champions in the dingy class sailing our Albacore against eh few others inte h fleet.

I then discovered Fireballs!!

that was abotu 10 years ago! don't sail much today, as Dad now has Mirage. Dont care for 'big boats (keel boats) and prefer the smaller, nimble dingines!

I'm just getting started in full-scale sailing. I have flown RC planes for several years now, but since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by the sailboats I saw along the Gulf coast. About a year ago, Hobby Lobby had a close out deal on a nice one-meter RC sailboat. After I got that and then a Victoria, I got involved with a local RC sailing club. (I was immediately hooked.) Several club members are also full-scale sailors. Anyway, next weekend, I hope to buy my first sailboat (~15 foot Catalina). With the assistance of a couple local sailors, I hope to be learning full-scale sailing this summer. (I hope 35 isn't too late to get started.)

I sail and windsurf at a local club but don't own a boat of my own (yet). I also have a kyosho sea dolphin that i'm learning RC with. I was wondering what the best way of waterproffing the hatches was. I got this sticky backed foam. Would this be any good?

wow... im so glad i found this forum!

as my first post i will tell you my background in sailing...

I began seling near 9 years old on the sailboat my father owned wich was a J-130 from j-boat. Shes was one of the fastest 40 footer on the water back in 1990. At 16 , ive bought my first keelboat with my 2 brothers and my sister , it was a j-24. Ive raced on it until 2001 as the skipper . Then the deal of a lifetime came up...a melges 24 for sale not too far from where i live...

if you guys dont know what is a melges 24 , its one of the fastest 24 footer avaible . Carbon mast , keel and rudder.

Im not 25 and i still own my melges and will for a while ... until i buy a melges 32 !

ciao!

partenaviadude,
The tape is one way of doing it. Best way? Beats me! I've used water proof tape to seal a hatch/opening and it works too...

sabots and windmills to the teen years, then multihulls (mostly hobies) through to the late twenties. an occassional turn as tactics dude on monohulls, aka: slow boats, and now dinghy sailing a self built bolger gypsy. RC sailing is still the most relaxing thing to do without getting wet or stepping a mast. my daughter (Stanford student, PROUD DAD) and i have 3 victorias and a ketch rigged fairwind. and now i am building a pair of footy's (feet?) for us when she returns to the gulf coast on break. an office mate and i are having a friendly wager on a footy race and the SMALLEST rc sailboat you can build... submicro servos, spit shot for ballast, and an inflatable pool with an ocsillating fan as a race course.

Thank You Spdsk8er... it's been a while since I've been new (young) at anything. The gr8 thing about forums is that even if the thread is 2 years old or older, if someone posts to it, it becomes new again... and folks who have posted to it earlier come back and read it, just like you did. I read the post policies and there are no expiration dates on threads: I suppose if there were, the threads would be archived or deleted. And I did read you post... EXCELLENT! In my humble sailing adventures I have met Hobie Alter and the whole Alter family, Ted Turner, Bill Beuthin, the late and beloved Carlton Tucker and many, many weekend warriors on beach cats, J 24's, Solings, Sunfish and Lasers. I've participated in the Hobie 16 Worlds placing 48th out of 240 teams in the world. I was also 8th out of 10 in the Alter Cup. Kind of an IROC for sailboats. Good luck and best wishes in all your endevours be it RC or Full Scale. Maybe we will see each other on the water... you will have to give me a head start! I am sure! 1m 47 now.

My wife and I own a Catalina 22. Very popular boat. Was a fixer upper, and now it is done. very happy and proud.
I have a Seawind I race with my local club, and a Victoria in the same color scheme of the Catalina.
LIFE IS GOOD.

After I watched the '87 America's Cup, I met up with the local MYC and got involved with 50-800's, US 1 Meter's, International A's and EC12's. Last year, we made our first boat purchase, a Catalina 34.
