I have been considering the RCV SP series of 4 stroke engines for scale projects. They seem to be the perfect solution for hiding an RC engine and using a larger scale diameter prop.

Have any of you used these engines? What are you opinions?
Do they have faster cylinder/piston ware? Do they have a problem with the rotating cylinder design? It looks to have a very thin wall. What about reliablity and other parts ware? Any over heating problems?

The pic shows what they look like.

I've broken mine in and love it. After priming (12 or 13 turns with finger over the exhaust) she hand starts on the 1st or 2nd flip. Juice has on in his TF Corsair. Do a search and go to his link to see and hear it fly.

Pete,

You start your RCV from the front? I thought these engines did not like to be started that way, that you were supposed to start them from the back with their adapter.

Vicar,
No they can be started from the front like any other engine with no problem.

Agree with Pete, I began with the adapter from behind but abandoned it when I realised how easy it was to hand start my RCV.60. But do use a glove or a stick, my engine has tried to "bite" me twice and has run backwards occasionally. Engine must be slobbering wet and throttle opening should be 1/4 or less when flipping over.
After about two hours run time I find my engine to run much cooler than I expected, I can even hold the fins after shut down - beware of the exhaust pipe though which is very hot.
One observation is that the crankcase ventilation nipple litterally spews out oily goo so I had to mount a PVC pipe through the fuse to collect and eject it near the fin.
In summary I find my RCV.60 much more user friendly than I expected and it pulls my 8 lbs Acapulco with authority. Coming in for landing with the engine ticking over at some 1200 prop rpm and the white prop blade tips easily visible is very scale like indeed. Hope this helps............Cheers/Harald
