Supplemnental Assembly information

I know that this plane is about three years old but I recently picked one up NIB. The link doesn't work any longer for the supplimental assembly info and my plane doesn't have the info included, does anyone this extra info??

Thanks for the help

Charrua,

If you maidened your Yak with elevators centered, and, at takeoff you didn't need a "diaper" because the airplane wanted to dive to the ground, then, you don't have a negative incidence problem in the stab. If to fly straight and level the Yak didn't require 30 + clicks of "Up" elevator trim, then, you don't have a problem.

If you do, then, the solution is to move the CG forward by 10mm, add about two degrees of "Up thrust" to the engine mount... to take out all of that "up" elevator trim which makes the airplane balloon below half throttle.

I'm confused by the above advice. If the stab has negative incidence, the leading edge is lower than the trailing edge with reference to the thrust line. This will result in downward force at the tail and the airplance will want to climb, not dive. Surely negative stab incidence requires down elevator trim to offset this effect. Can someone please clear up my confusion?

Well I finally got around to starting the assembly on my Yak but I've run into a couple of problems. My plane didn't have the factory motor mount with it when I got it and since I'm using the YS140 I figured I'd use one of the Dubro anti virbration mounts.

First problem, the mount is to large to allow the motor to slide back to get the drive washer 5.5" from the firewall like the manual calls for. The closest I can get is 6". Besides the prop being an extra 1/2" out from the cowl, will this cause any other problems?

Second problem, the throttle arm is directly in front of the mount leaving no way to get a straight connection for the push rod. As the picture shows the mount only blocks part of the ball link, do you guys think the mount would be made to weak if I ground a spot on the mount to allow the push rod to lineup better with the throttle arm?

With the motor mounted further forward, the prop will be further out in front of the cowling naturally, but it won't look too odd being just 1/2". The C.G. will move forward a little too, but you should ba able to compensate for that with placement of the fuel tank, Rx battery, etc..
For the throttle linkage, why not simply put a bend in the pushrod so it clears the engine mount?

That's pretty much what I was thinking as far as the prop being farther out and the CG. I will try to just bend a throttle rod but it since it's so close I'm not sure if it will work.

Why not use a longer ball stud? Your LHS should have one, but you will probably find it in the R/C car section.

If you have trouble finding a long ball link, putting a U-bend in the pushrod could solve your clearance problem.

Here is a post that shows a throttle extension on a YS 1.40. I don't know if he made it or if it is available commercially.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cg moving forward. My 72" with the ys 140 was way tail heavy. I ended up moving the elevator servos into the fuse below the rudder servo, balanced perfectly after that. With the anti-vibe mount and the engine slightly farther out your cg should be just about right. I will warn you that this plane is VERY sensitive to CG changes, be sure to have it ~.5 in forward of the recommended CG for the maiden, then move it back slowly as you get used to the flight characteristics. Also, the elevator is very effective, so low rates are a must.

Did you guys use the CA methond from the manual for glueing the horizontal stab or did you use epoxy?

I used the method in the instructions, and it's worked fine for me. In fact it's the firest time I ever used that method, and now use it for any ARF that I build. Better than cutting the covering, and perhaps scoring the wood enough to make it into a break point.

Not even close.
I had one with a YS140 and that really was not enough. Satio 180 or YS 160.

Edit to add: I also had a hard time balancing with the YS140, there was just not enough weight up front.

Did anyone have problems with this plane snapping out of maneuvers with full elevator or rudder input?

I still fly mine on occasion. It has not had any snapping problems with me. I also had the CG problem mentioned above. I mounted two batteries to a ply tray above the engine. This was just right using a Saito 1.80. Even with the factory mount the 1.80 also sticks forward more than the book shows. Good thing I guess, since the forward weight helped the CG some.

daveopam.... you reffer about the CG problem.... i have this plane about one year and the first flights has very problematic for me because the plane "float" too much..... virtually i landed in harrier position..... the CG was set like the manual.... but i put more weight in the noose..... bateries, smoke pump.... all forward, the plane change and now is flight is more easier to me.... im not a 3D pilot.

That sounds about right. With the CG at the spot QQ recommends it is hard to land in the wind. I think I am a little in front of the spot also. This plane is no 3D monster anyway. It is much better at other things.

Say I have one of these 72" QQ YAK's NIB and was thinking of getting into the assembly. My hesitation (and question) is if it would be a good fit to use a 26-30 CC gas engine? I sold my YS 140 and don't care to use glow so I'm hoping there is some feedback from those that ran this plane on glow and especially on gas. If gas is a no-go then the plane has to go.
Thanks

bigben. it really depends on the type of flying you want to do with the plane. If your looking for all out 3D unlimited vertical power on this plane you should have kept your YS140.
I flew the plane for half a season with a YS 140 and loved the power but HATED the glow clean up and the price tag for 30% fuel to the point that I stopped taking the plane to the field so I sold the YS and bought a MLD 28cc gasser. If your looking for a real nice flying plane that has very good power (not unlimited power but very good power) and a plane that will more than likely last much longer without all the shake of the big YS 4 stroke, then a small gas engine is a great choice. The MLD 28 runs great, runs very smooth, and is very light weight.

I attached a couple pics of the MLD mounted on the Yak.
