Dion my grandfather use to uses that process for plating plastics but not only was is very time consuming but with todays enviromental standards it is not allowed in our area any more. It also had a tendence to look like the skin of a orange, our metal finish is flat smooth just like a sheet of aluminum. I believe they still use that type of process overseas, there enviroment laws are less stringent than ours.

SJN- Unfortunately this is not something you can do home. We have been plating custom projects for about 7 years with this process and are familiar with all type of plating processes and subsurfaces

On one of those car shows they showed a small rubber football being chromed. They sprayed it on with a spraygun and it was real chrome.

Also could you do props? I saw a P-51 rc model many years ago that had a flying four blade fiberglass prop that was chromed. It looked amazing while flying.

Paul I know of that product also and it too has the same characteristics of the old time chrome plating process, it too has the orange skin look and you have to apply it to a GLASS SMOOTH surface, not very practical in our buisness since our customers want all the details of there project to show, and the other fact is that P-38s and other aircraft are made of aluminum not chrome.
One draw back of our Aluminum P-38 is that it has been very humid here in Ct. and because of this high humidity our lightnig has started to tarnish, so now we have to polish off the tarnish. I will look like a coal miner after I'm finish. Once the plane is completely finished I will apply a liquid that slow the oxidation way down, it like a wax but doen't effect the shine of the metal.

Enrique The Yellow P-38 has a 108" wing span and I believe its a 1/5 scale. I order 2 ZDZ 40s that should be here this week.

I'm curious, how long does it take to cover a part with aluminum? That would give me a better idea of it's practicality, and is it difficult once you know what you are doing?

Thanks,

Dion

Dion like any plating process it is the preparation that makes or breaks a good job, once we have the desired texture, details and porosity, sending the parts through the plating equipment takes about 35 min from start to finish, then we knock off the oxidation like as we did in the earlier pictures. So I can say that the split in time would be 70/30. As for being difficult someone once said "People that are good at what they do make what they do look easy" Hope this helps

Ron,

Looks like you have another winner. I'm keeping the first one nice and shinny, alot like waxing a car. The polish you recommended works great. I still can't get over how nice this plane looks, lots of good feedback.

Now if we would only get some nice weather when I want to get out to the field, I'll really show her off.

Thanks again Ron, your current project looks really great.

Cliff its good to here from you, the guys here REALLY miss that P-38. They have been pushing me to get this one finished but still have a long way to go. It seems to me the VQ that you purchased from us wasn't half as difficult to finish. We still get customers that saw your VQ on display and wanting to know were it is now. I tell them its in good hands
This new P-38 slowed down on progress, we just finished the Seinfeld project ( 3 years ) and are have to catch up on some of our other customers work before I can get back to the lighting. I have the engines, servos, gear, fuel tank and gear door actuators installed, but still have to plumb everything, then its off to our paint shop for invasion stripe and yellow and black trim just like yours. I'll post more pictures as we progress.

Sorry for the laps in progress. We are just finishing up a large project and I will be getting some time to work on the 38. I'm working on the ignitions locations, I have made mounting plates that are removable and will do the same for the batteries. This bird has alot of batteries, 2 -1400 mah for Ign. 1 -2000 mah for receiver and a 3000 mah for the servos. That set up was recommended by a few veteran fliers. I will post some pictures this week.

Metalmorphous,
When will we be able to get our warbirds in line to be baptized in this gorgeoous metal? What's
it going to cost? Come on, tell us the truth so we can have beautiful metal works of art flying in the Wild Blue...

I've used an aluminium metal spraying process before to surface plugs prior to moulding, I'm guessing that's what this is. I looked into vacuum metalising but it can only deposit a few microns which would polish straight off if you tried. Oh, there's another version of vacuum metalising that they use for depositing aluminium onto optical mirrors (for telescopes and the like) but the equipment for that is hideously expensive. Nice P38 BTW!

That would be difficult Stu as this is a yellow aircraft kit.
Good Luck

I probably should have said I reckon the alum coating on the P38 is probably done by metal spraying. I've used the process before, but on a plug, not on a model as I don't do stuff big enough to handle the weight.
