I just got my hands on a World models Tai-Ji with a Rossi .45. The question is what kind of fuel to use with this engine?? Do I use a different one during Break in or just plain stick to my usual?? Powermaster 15% Nitro 18% Castor

I´m going to it´s maiden flight on Wednesday so I really need your input A.S.A.P.

Thanks in advance for your comments...

I just use a straight 80/20 fuel in my Rossi 45...they don't need nitro and that 15% of yours would be a bit too much without shimming the head up somewhat to drop the compression.
Rossi instructions say to run in for at least 30 minutes at a rich 2 stroke (rich 2 stroke in this case means just before it's so rich it begins to break into a 4 stroke) and it's best to use at least the smallest recommended prop. Use a fuel with some castor when running in (and preferably when flying too).

5% nitro and I'd use a 10x6 to break it in. They don't idle worth a crap until the begin to breakin but you'll get it there with a few tanks of fuel. Like downunder said put that extra head shim in there if you plan to use the 15% nitro...

Guys,

Thanks for your comments, Another question for WreckRman2. Do you recommend using the 10x6 just for break in, the recommendation on the engine's manual goes for a 11x6. As for the Nitro % I'll definetly change for a 5%. Don´t want to risk .

Thanks guys,

Well I'll jump in on the prop size. Probably one of the best general running in instructions are what's on the Jett web site and it makes good sense. Their idea is to have the engine running rich but at roughly the same revs as you'll be flying with and the only way to do that is to use a smaller than normal prop. They also state that the majority of the running in is for the con rod, not so much the piston/liner. This is where the castor comes into it because it doesn't get squeezed out of the bushes as easily as synthetics do.

I think you'll be delighted with the Rossi...even on no nitro fuel mine's a one flick starter and idles very low.

Mine had a hard time swinging an 11x6 until it was broken in so I'd just use the 10x6 for breakin then switch to a prop that is going to fit you best.

rfarias..
I just go for any old hot plug..even the cheapest seem to work as well as any other. It's so long now since I've had to buy a plug I couldn't even hazard a guess at what brand I'm using now This may be helped by the fact I never run the engine anywhere near peaked out.
The Jett web site is here..
http://www.jettengineering.com/ click on FAQ then Engine Break-In.

I have three rossi 45. All run very good from the box. I run the OS #8 plug (other plugs work fine too, I just run these cause that is what I seem to have the best luck with in all my engines, plus they last along time). Rossi like to turn the RPM's so don't lug it down with a large prop unless you go down in pitch. I run 15% cool power and my rossi have about three years on them and they have crap loads of compression. Hope this works out.

Noahb,

How´s the weather where you live?? I've heard this has a lot to do with your engine's performance. Where I live is very hoy-n-humid. And yesterday I ran 2 tanks worth as a run in, and I didn't have any problems until I was getting past 20 minutes or so. The carburator kept getting a big amount of air bubbles from the tank, I changed all my sylicone tubing and kept having the same problem. The tank was a little bit more than half empty when this started to happen. Does anyone know what can be causing this, overheating?? The engine is installed inverted on a Tai Ji 40 and yes a ran the whole 2 tanks with the plane tied down to a post. WIll it get better if it's airborne? Do I use a lighter sylicone tube inside the tank?

Is the tubing inside the tank supposed to move freely, freely I mean even come back to the bottom when you point the nose down??

Guys,
I need all the help I can get!!!! WHich you guys are giving me.. Thanks in advance.

R.

Its very hot down here in New Mexico. Not real humid but very hot. If you are getting air in the line, it is either a pin hole in the line somewhere or the fuel is foaming. The rossi's spin a high rpm and can and will cause the fuel to foam if you don't have enough padding around the tank. I pad mine with reg. open cell foam. If anypart of the tank is touching the fuse, you can get foam. This is the air that you see in the fuel lines. As far as the tubing in the fuel tank, it should not touch the back of the tank and should limp to the bottom or top if you turn it upside down. Let me know if you need any more info...hope this helps...
