Revoxdude, DickNadine, and/or Anyone Else:

Catching up with the reading of this thread and was wondering if you had a chance to start construction of the Hoop Skirt? It was fun to build back in '71.

I'm back in business. this time its the Ringer, from plans by Roy jr. pair of 13"dia hoops at the end of a 16" wing and a barrel tail. structure all complete @ 7 oz. will be electric power. things sure are different trying to build, store, display and explain all the new models hanging from the ceiling of the spare bedroom. next will be another Hoop Plane, probably around a 24" Dia. to replace the big one, lost in Hurricane Katrina. got to keep building the old time ODD BALLS. sure would like to find a copy of the book by or of Roy Clough. then I could start building one of each of his models. dick

Hi Dick,

No luck with the pic of the ringer, not even a sign of an attachment.

I don't know what happened to the pic of the Ringer. It came through "Loud and Clear" in your PM to me. I tried to upload it to this Forum for everyone else but it didn't work.
I have had problems for months with uploading images to this Forum, I get a "File error ocurred" message. It doesn't happen to me when I send a pic using eMail.

To Roy L Clough fans - - -
Dick's model is well underway. It still needs a suit of clothes but shows clearly what it will look like. It has short cylinders for wings on the end of stub wings and another short cylinder for tail feathers. This short cylinder appears to be articulated as if a "fully flying" tail unit. I was eagerly awaiting the results of Dick's first Clough model the Ring Wing and sorry that it went the way of all Dick's models, lost with everything else in the damage caused by Katerina. It will be great when the new one flies.

Personally I know I can trim a model for "free flight job" (dare I say those words here?) I prefer to have fixed horizantal & vertical stabilizing surfaces (or equivalent) and attach the movable control surfaces to them. As I've said before, my skils with the sticks are such that my models need to be stable to control my erratic stick movements.

Hi Everyone;

Greetings to you All from hot'n'humid Florida.

Re Roy L. Cough Jr.; well I was just reviewing/rereading the June '06 issue of Flying Models magazine, wherein Roy presented his construction article for his old '52 design called the SLOTTO MK 5, and it is a good read. Then, I got into the RCU site herein for AMA news and such, lookig for the date for the upcoming California Trade Show [formerly the IMS in Pasadena], and noted with sadness, a submission dated 5.25.06 stating that Mr. Clough had passed away on 5.16.06. And that since '45 or so had subitted more than 155 of his designs to the modelling press; refer back to that submission for more details.

Alas, another of the Greats' has passed from us; I have certainly enjoyed reading and re-reading many of Roys interesting design articles, so let us All herein raise our glasses high and give a final, belated salute to Roy L. Cough Jr. Salute Roy, you will be missed.

Best regards to Everyone from Florida,

Joe Nagy.

Dick:

I'm unaware of any one book that Roy published of his models. They were at one time printed in the volumes of "Popular Mechanics do-it-yourself encyclopedia" of the sixties-early seventies. I've attached an image of his parasol free flight plane (.020) from volume 1 for your information...

Hope this helps...

Cheers

THanks. its ONE more on the list to build. since I can't find a source of his plans, I guess I will have to put the Noodle to work and draw my own plans from the photo. only question is-- is the over head sub wing controlable or just for looks? have enough electric motors and equiptment for 2 more planes from my fantastic buddy- BUTCH Basset, back in Waveland, Miss. who also was wahed out of his house, not destroyed like ours. his is almost ready to move back in to his reconstructed house, by himself, from the FEMA trailer, ala Cardboard Box. the 2, 80" Playboys are complete, one Red and one Yellow, electric and almost ready to fly, from pieced together, 1937 Clevland Plans. have another problem coming up -- our long time Hobby shop, Mercury Hobbies, Abtia Springs, La is closeing up, all the old models are gone and the new guys are on the Net. they sure aren't getting any companionship from it. more fellows are flying solo in their backyards. anyhow Yaall keep up the good work. recieved a good birthday card, words are-- Its Not about Age- its about ATTITUDE" and its posted here above the computor. dick

Hi there all you Roy L Cough fans.

Thanks for the drawings, I really love the feel of them, they take me back to childhood. I didn't actually see any of these drawings/model when I was young but they bring back that feeling of wonder. They are crude when compared to what is built now but they seem somehow more real.

I just got back from London yesterday having had a Magnetic Resonance Scan of my brain. It involved 3/4 of an hour of vibration and peculiar very loud noises, the machine costs £millions. It was nice to get home and look at models that can be built on the kitchen table from found materials. A bean can here a bit of split bamboo there, all done with little more than a pair of scissors and dad's old safety razor blade. I wonder if there is more to be got from models when there is less put into them. As a youngster I knew that flying and probably the model would and as a pile of bits or irretrievably stuck up the only tree in the field. I'm very poor on the sticks and afraid to loose the model if I fly it. It was no problem in my youth, I knew what was inevitable and accepted it.

P.S. Keep up the good work Dick.
